Arsene Wenger has asked Arsenal fans to respect their former star Robin van Persie when he plays against them for the first time since joining Manchester United this summer.
While at Arsenal, Robin van Persie voiced his unhappiness at not winning silverware. The Dutchman was infamously signed in by Manchester United for £24 million during the summer transfer window.
On Saturday, it will be the first time Robin van Persie plays against the club that made him a football star when Arsenal travels to play against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The game should be a heated and emotional affair for Arsenal fans, who had grew to love Robin van Persie as the leader of the Gunners. Arsene Wenger understands the special relationship Robin van Persie had with Arsenal fans, nonetheless he has asked them not to boo their former captain on Saturday.
However, Arsenal fans won’t forget about Robin van Persie’s betrayal that easy. Expect the Gunners to break in at Old Trafford with a couple of new football antics.
Arsene Wenger believes the 26-year-old Netherlands international deserves a memorable reception for the quality service Robin van Persie provided Arsenal for a long time.
“I hope it is a respectful one because he has played for us for eight years, he has done very well for us,” Arsene Wenger said.
“You want him to be respected.
“We campaign against discrimination, it was still the case last week so why should it not be the case this week?
“I don't know [what the fans will do], I think he will get the reception I hope for,” Arsene Wenger added.
Robin van Persie, who reportedly signed a four-year contract with Manchester United, picked up his phenomenal form from last season. Robin van Persie scored 37 goals in 48 games for Arsenal last season. He also won the Golden Boot award from English Premier League.
This season Robin van Persie has already scored nine goals in 12 matches for Manchester United.
