Friday afternoon, Juanita testified in court that the couple had tried counseling. Michael Jordan was not in court and was represented by his attorneys. Friday's proceeding took about 1½ hours. Because both had agreed on how to split the assets, details of the Jordan finances were hidden from public access. "Typical Michael fashion: All of the i's were dotted and the t's were crossed," one friend of Juanita Jordan said.
The Jordans wed at 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 2, 1989, in the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas when son Jeffrey was 10 months old. She had filed a paternity suit against him. Hard to believe with that foundation, this marriage did not work.
At one point in their marriage, Juanita reportedly hired a private detective to tail Jordan on the road for four years. Sources said she had threatened to leave him several times. "These are two people who have lived separately -- except for raising their children -- for quite a long time," said one of Juanita Jordan's close friends, speaking on condition of anonymity.
And so, Juanita scores a big payday and the price was simply humbling herself for years, knowing MJ was going to wander. His eyes were on other ladies, while her eyes were on the cash.
Maybe this isn't much of a story, since around half of U.S. marriages end in divorce. Maybe it isn't much of a story as MJ is no longer MJ the player. Maybe it isn't much of a story because MJ best pal Charles Oakley hasn't offered his colorful take yet.
To me, it is an interesting story as it coincides with the international sports/marketing/nike uber athlete that MJ passed the torch to, Tiger Woods, announcement that he and his wife, are starting a family. Maybe, just maybe, Michael choreographed that too....
