Four Tigers Selected on Day 2 of MLB Draft

BATON ROUGE -- Four LSU players were selected Wednesday during the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft.

MLB conducted Rounds 4-30 on Wednesday after completing the first three rounds on Tuesday. The draft concludes on Thursday with Rounds 31-50.

The LSU players selected Wednesday included pitcher Louis Coleman (5th round, Kansas City Royals); outfielder/infielder Ryan Schimpf (5th round, Toronto Blue Jays); outfielder Blake Dean (10th round, Minnesota Twins); and first baseman/catcher Sean Ochinko (11th round, Toronto Blue Jays).

LSU junior outfielder Jared Mitchell (1st round, Chicago White Sox) and second baseman DJ LeMahieu (2nd round, Chicago Cubs) were selected Tuesday.

LeMahieu, a draft-eligible sophomore from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is batting a team-high .340 on the year with 12 doubles, three triples, four homers and 39 RBI.

Coleman, the 2009 SEC Pitcher of the Year, is 13-2 this season with a 2.76 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 114 innings. The senior from Schlater, Miss., is allowing just a .217 opponent batting average.

Schimpf, a junior from Covington, La., is hitting .335 with team-highs of 17 doubles and 19 home runs. Schimpf, a second-team all-SEC selection, has driven in 63 runs and scored 65.

Dean, a first-team all-SEC performer, is batting .333 with 16 doubles, 15 homers and 65 RBI. The junior from Crestview, Fla., was a first-team all-American in 2008.

Ochinko, a junior from Parkland, Fla., is hitting .330 with 14 doubles, seven homers, 50 RBI and 42 runs.

The top-ranked Tigers (51-16) will depart for Omaha, Neb. on Thursday morning and open College World Series play at 6 p.m. Saturday versus Virginia (48-13-1) in Rosenblatt Stadium. LSU is seeking its sixth national championship and its first since 2000.

Six LSU baseball signees have also been chosen in the draft, including outfielder Slade Heathcott (1st round, New York Yankees); right-handed pitcher Zack Von Rosenberg (6th round, Pittsburgh Pirates); right-handed pitcher Brody Colvin (7th round, Philadelphia Phillies); outfielder Chad Stang (8th round, Milwaukee Brewers); right-handed pitcher Mitchell Mormann (20th round, San Francisco Giants); and catcher Wes Luquette (27th round, Pittsburgh Pirates).
