I don't usually like posting on completely baseless rumors....no, I kid, of course I do. And this one is pretty huge. One message board poster over at RotoWorld posted a whopper of a rumor yesterday, and of course it involves MLB and steroids.
Okay, here's the deal. I work at CBS Sports and across the street is the MLB Network. I overheard one of our execs talking to a PR guy here. He said, "rumor is another big star is going to be suspended 50 games." Now, like I said, you can't get more rumory (yeah, I'm making this word up) than this. I heard no name or anything, but you know how the world works, the high ups have the info and they talk to each other. This is all I have on the matter.
Now, I know what you're thinking. This is complete crap. Well, perhaps, but RotoInfo (completely different site) had this to say on their Twitter page today:
According to sources close MLB Lance Berkmans name has been floating around the commissioners office as a possible 50 game suspension looms
So, it sounds like someone is likely to get nailed for messing around with steroids real soon, and Berkman seems like the probably candidate. But what if it isn't Berkman?
- Pujols? There have been questions about him for years.
- Big Papi? A suddenly huge decline in productivity. Did he get nabbed during spring training, and it's messing with his mind?
- Carlos Quentin? Had an MVP-caliber year last year out of nowhere.
Another star to be suspended 50 games? [RotoWorld]

Actually, the early scouting reports on him showed concern about his lack of size...

Every player in the whole league is on steroids and will be banned soon. I will be starting at 1st base for the Yankees next week, the oldest regular ever in the Major Leagues.

If this is the 'roider, I'm going to be a little hurt that he didn't use while he was in Philadelphia.....

Sabathia hits homeruns, but its not due to skill. When pitchers hit his bat or his girth, the laws of physics say the ball is going to richochet into the stands - four hundred feet away, when it is thrown at him at 100 MPH. Have you never thrown a ball at a barn wall and tried catching it, as it sails high over your head? lol.

OK SO NOW EVERY DAM BASEBALL PLAYER IS FREAKIN USING STEROIDS...HMMM EXCELLENT SO LET THEM ALL HIT HOME RUNS MAYBE IT WILL HELP THE TEAM....JUST KIDING YEAH WHAT IS THIS YEAR COMING TOO... WITHOUT STEROIDS THEY WOULD PRETTY MUCH RULE OUT ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS WHO DONT NEED THAT CRAP TO HIT A HOMER .... CANT WAIT TO FIND OUT THOUGH!!!

This topic needs to be ejected as it is directly interfering with my enjoyment of the game. Now names are "floating around" for possible suspensions. This is f-ing ridiculous.

So does Mike Hampton.....or he did.
5/13/09 | jgfan09
The reason I named Zambrano was because no one had mentioned a pitcher yet and Zambrano cranks out an awful lot of home runs for a pitcher.
So look at C.C. Sabathia he hits homeruns

Dwight Howard/ LeBron James?

Name ANY mlb player and I will say that he's on steroids.

First of all let the facts come out and speak for its self...Let the suspension drop and talk about it from there!
5/13/09 | jgfan09
Carlos Zambrano is not on steroids, he is a big guy, whats next are you going to say Prince Fielder is on steroids? Or how about Ryan Braun? They all aren't on steroids between braun fielder and Zambrano!

Second, I CAN'T BELIEVE nobody has mentioned this guy:

First of all EFF YOU for even mentioning Albert Pujols. You get his name out of your dirty little mouth.

I seriously think that someday, Albert Pujols will be busted of steroids.
I am typically not very gullible, but I would be absolutely shocked if Pujols was on the juice.....

I like the guy and all but he's for sure not juicing. That's just idiotic to imply. Its like implying CECIL Fielder was juicing.

oh and berkman is fat...sloppy..and a product of those short porches at minute maid
5/13/09 | lightsleeper
well you've already decided he's guilty..so...

First off lets get this out of the way....knowing someone who heard something from someone who thought he heard something from someone who said they heard something from someone...isn't research...either is googling. I don't believe ANY of these reports. I do believe, however that the media needs news (you figure out what i'm getting at). Now to address your rumors.
Carlos Q was considered a TOP 100 PROSPECT IN MLB. His "out of no where" season last year was no fluke and was projected to be a break out season by many. Big Papi has had what 2 surgeries on his knees and I think shoulder in the last 2 years (I think that might explain his power decline..i don't know i'm no genius like you)...Pujols...i've always questioned him like i've always questioned A rod. You might be on to something there. All I know is my fav player of all time Griffey jr is clean. I have no doubts about that-or else he'd have 1000 hr's right now and wouldn't have missed most of the past decade.

Jamie Moyer.
Once known as a finesse pitcher, Moyer became under suspicion when he busted out in the 2009 season breaking 65 MPH.
An investigation immediately followed.

As long as its not a Brewer, I'm rather indifferent. If its Pujols, would it really matter? The only batters of this era in his class (Manny, A-Rod, and Bonds) took performance enhancers of some kind and we know it so its not like baseball can be tarnished anymore.

I'd even be surprised to find out that Bagwell used, but not as much as finding out that Berkman did. As for Berkman's BA, he's gone thru' slumps before...I think his hitting will come around.
5/12/09 | raiders1steve | 10 respect
Rumor has it that Jeff bagwell was using ROIDS.....one local beat writer for the Astros said when he walked into the Astros locker room that Bags looked like Popeye.bags also commented to said writer-are they reallly going to look into players that might have been using steroids-when this issue first surfaced. I don't think Berkman did roids...just my opinion....he just sucks now-his batting average is hovering around 196.

Carlos Zambrano
5/12/09 | crux5126
To be honest, outside of Griffey, I don't really care about any players that are a product of the 90s. It seems it was so rampant at the end of the 90s you might as well not be surprised to find out that anyone from that era used it. Now, on the other hand, if any of the new young stars (i.e. Longoria, H. Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera) get busted, I'll lose all hope for baseball as they have come after the steroids thing came out into the open.
5/12/09 | HouTxFan | 4119 respect
Want this DISCLOSURE made right up front...I AM AN ASTROS FAN. I won't adamantly deny, at this point, that it is Berkman, but I will say I'd be totally surprised. He's actually known for not just being an upstanding guy, etc, but for being a "goody two shoes". Also, he has voluntarily come out on record in the past with his views of steroid usage when other players were exposed for it. I know others who were later exposed had previously done the same (A-Rod, for example), but Berkman did it voluntarily, not necessarily just when responding to a question. If he does end up being the "accurate target" of these rumors, he would not only be a steroid-using cheater, but also a huge hypocrite. As an Astros fan, I will be extremely disappointed if it was to ever come out that he uses PEDs.
5/12/09 | justinringhofer
carlos quentin because his going to want to get better than use steriodes

Agree completely. Rumors are little more than things that are fun for people like us to kick around. If, indeed, an announcement and/or suspension is forthcoming, I'd just as soon wait until it actually comes out.
