Source confirms "strong interest" by Jamison in Lakers, says deal not done. Charlotte Observer says Jamison "will" be a Laker, per source.— David Aldridge (@daldridgetnt) July 16, 2012
And Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reported, "The Charlotte Bobcats have lost out on free agent Antawn Jamison, who will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers."
That sounds pretty final.
The problem is that Jamison is a free agent, which means that he must either fit into the Lakers mini-mid-level exception or take the veterans minimum. This is a big reason why they haven't been able to go after a ton of free agents and have mostly been pursuing sign-and-trades, that is until Steve Nash fit into their trade exception.
So they're left with those two moves to make. If Jamison will take the pay cut then he may end up a Laker, which certainly wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. He's still got gas in the tank and averaged 17.2 points per game last season. He'd be a solid addition to the Lakers' bench.
