Wearing the Sunday red and pumping his fists wildly, inciting a raucous Valhalla Golf Club crowd, you'd think Tiger Woods was taking over the Ryder Cup. Instead, it's Anthony Kim, a 23-year-old from Los Angeles who's leading the United States.
This is the most fun I've had watching golf without Tiger Woods, and honestly, this year's Ryder Cup surpasses many of Woods' best victories in terms of enjoyment. A great deal has to do with Kim.
The youngest player on the US team, Kim charged out to an early lead on Sergio Garcia, who has dominated most of his Ryder Cup matches in the past. Kim didn't just edge Garcia, he blew him off the course with 4 holes to play.
If the US can maintain their current advantage in each of the remaining matches and secure their first Cup victory since 1999, Kim may be viewed largely as the hero. We know Tiger is enjoying the hopeful win at home and we also know he's watching the golfer most likely to challenge him when he returns. A lot of golf fans, including myself, have a new favorite.
