About Me:
I'm going to let Jarrett Jack speak for the Blazers winning their last 14 of 15 with this: "If that's not on ESPN's top-10 plays, something is wrong. Call Stuart Scott, or whoever, and tell him if that's not in the top 10, we are coming to take over the show. Tell them we are coming to Bristol (Conn.), and we are bringing Al Sharpton with us."

Are guaranteed contracts what corrupts the NBA ?
8/24/06

There was an excellent posting on Blazer's Edge yesterday about there being 2 NBAs that all fans of the game should read. What is happening to our league ? What happened to the NBA we grew up with ? Has it all changed to the point where the average fan is just a revenue stream and players like Zach Randolph (pictured) and Darius Miles collectively spit on the fan base regularly?

Maybe the players on the 1977 team weren't saints -- maybe they had better agents to cover up for them. Obviously the media today is a factor. But if Walton and Lucas were having sex parties, we didn't know about it.

Even in the 90s, the Clyde-TP-Buck-Duck-Kersey era, there was still a sense of decorum. Or maybe I just imagined it. Again, maybe they didn't get caught, or they were better at being on the DL. I don't know.

What I do know is how much I dislike this world of guaranteed contracts where players can't be released even for choking their coach (and no coach deserved it more than PJ) because it means there is absolutely nothing that anyone can do about the bad behavior. Except not support it. And that means not supporting a team that I grew up loving, still love and will always love. Portland has started to take baby steps to get back to good, decent human beings.

How do I support the second without rewarding the first ?

You're in a tough spot.  Modern sports mean that players come first and teams second.  Owners care more about the bottom line than winning.   Why should fans be held to a higher standard?

Portland used to have the most loyal fans in the league (I remember their streak of consecutive selll-outs) but obviously iyou're one of the diehards.

i really have no counsel for you except to look at Cubs fans.  You think you have it tough?

garunteed contracts did change a lot.  But when you go searching into some of roughest 'hoods in America to find the rawest, most skilled talent and convince them to skip college and play for you, so you can sell phenom tickets and hope to win games...you've got to offer them SOMETHING.

The problem is, that ownerships involvment stops there.  This isn't your high school coaches and consuelor who cared about your development as a person, this is owner who care about your profit value.  I'd say lack of mentorship and simple "caring" for the human condition corrupted the NBA.

Beaze, I think you are definitely on to something there. Greed on all levels -- players, agents, owners, team organizations, media -- is disappointing when it is held up as the way to be in our culture. A lot of kids recruited come into it with reasonable motives -- they want to buy a house for their mom, or pay off her bills. But it's crazy amounts of guaranteed money that leads to bad decisions, or being taken advantage of by someone else who did go to college. Also the fact that having those bajillions of dollars means you can surround yourself with people who always say yes to you, who approve of even the dumbest of moves, which hurts the organization, your fan base, and the town you represent.
