After 16 regular season games, plus the playoffs, we are finally down to the final two! The San Jose Sabercats will take on the Columbus Destroyers in ArenaBowl XXI today in New Orleans.
On paper, this matchup looks lopsided. At the same time, Columbus' last 2 games looked the same way and they won them both. Despite finishing the regular season with a 7-9 record, the Destroyers have made it to the big game. They are undoubtedly taking inspiration from the Chicago Rush, who won it all last year despite having an identical 7-9 regular season record.
San Jose comes into this game as the clear favorite. They have won 12 straight games, including last week's semifinal matchup against Chicago. They have the experience, led by Mark Grieb, who has won 2 ArenaBowl championships with San Jose.
Everything says that San Jose should win this game, but given Chicago's performance last year, and given the fact that Columbus has already taken down 2 heavily favored teams in the playoffs, anything can happen. The neutral-site crowd in New Orleans will most likely be behind them since they are the underdog, so if they can get out front early, they just might pull it off. Lucky for Columbus, this game isn't being played on paper and they have every chance of winning.
