Arizona State Dennis Dome Football Practice Facility Destroyed By Storm

Note To Self: Don't Build An Inflatable Practice Facility
8/29/08

This was how ASU's recently built $8.4 million practice facility (complete with artificial grass) known as the Dennis Dome looked like less than 24 hours ago.

And this is how it looks today (pic courtesy of With Leather).

That's because last night a storm with 75-mph winds ripped through the area. Man, who could have seen that coming? I mean, desert regions are known for their incredibly mild climate, right?

The storm hurled pieces of the Dome across the north campus. We saw pieces of the canvas and of insulation as far away as Sun Angel Stadium and even a sizable chunk lodged in the trees and fence surrounding Packard Stadium.

Needless to say, this won't be the only loss ASU suffers this year.

Naturally, the fact that the facility was just finished in July is sort of a problem. ASU essentially just flushed $8 million down the toilet. But I'm certainly glad to see the money wasn't spent on something useful, like education.

By the way, can someone tell me why ASU actually signed off on building a permanent practice facility like this? There's only about a million things that could possibly go wrong with it.

But hey, what do you expect? It's Arizona State, not Harvard.

That's ok, there's probably a couple thousand co-eds that would be willing to inflate that bad boy back up. Blowing and football go hand in hand in Tempe.

I always thought the purpose of having an inflatable roof was that you could deflate it when a storm was on the way. Granted, the summer monsoons in Arizona are unexpected, but I don't know what they were thinking here. At least it's apparently just $1 million down the drain and not the full $8 million, not that that's much better.

I'm just glad practice wasn't going on at the time - given the reports of the damage around town, they were lucky nobody was hurt. Just heard from one of my friends, her power was out for almost 12 hours.
