Once upon a time, when I was younger and stupider, I worked on the Hill in DC. It had nothing to do with me wanting to be in politics at all. It was that I was about to finish an internship and really needed a job. It was interesting for a period of time, but it quickly soured any taste I ever had for politics. Most politicians are total blowhards who concentrate only on doing whatever it takes to get reelected. They'll lie outright, make stupid deals with each other, and backstab each other at the drop of a hat. And in addition to that, they seemingly have no clue about what national issues desperately need to be addressed.
And today that's happening once again.
Sen. Arlen Specter, who's the senior Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee - and an avowed Eagles fan - wants an independent investigation of the Patriots' taping of opposing coaches' signals similar to the Mitchell Report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball.
Specter's mad that Goodell destroyed the tapes and claims the NFL is condoning cheating by claiming Spygate is over.
Next week Specter plans to call for a independent investigation on the rampant fibbing problem in the country as well.
Anyway, I'm glad Specter wants to solve this so badly, it's not like we have other things to worry about, like a war in Iraq or a crumbling economy at home. Let's spend taxpayer money on determining something that we already know - the Patriots cheated.
See that's the stupidest thing about all of this. I don't need a government report to tell me the Patriots cheated. Everyone knows they cheated. They'll have that hanging over their heads forever thanks to every New England fan in America reminding them of that. It also wrecked most peoples' opinion of Bill Belichick and has soured people on Tom Brady.
As far as I'm concerned, that's punishment enough. Specter, unlike most politicians, has done a lot of good work over his long Senate career. But I'd advise him that rather than trying to appeal to the disgruntled Eagles fan base, he should just get back to doing real work.
