Arsenal agree to Barcelona’s £23.4 million transfer move for Alex Song
Barcelona has finally won the bragging rights for Arsenal’s coveted midfielder Alex Song. The transfer ends a month long transfer saga between Arsenal and Barcelona. Alex Song’s departure from North London was imminent; as a matter of fact most analysts had predicted the transfer to go down on Monday.
The 24-year-old Cameroon international attracted a lot of interest from Barcelona this summer. Barcelona’s new manager Tito Vilanova is a huge fan of Alex Song, who played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s success last season. Alex Song scored a goal and provided 14 assists to bring Arsenal from the bottom of the league to a third place finish on the Premier League table.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was quite reluctant to let Alex Song go. Now, Arsene Wenger has lost two key players from his first line up in two weeks. Last week, Arsenal accepted Manchester United’s £24 million offer for Robin van Persie.
According to reports, Barcelona paid Arsenal £23.4 million for Alex Song, who signed in a five-year-contract with the Spanish football giants. Alex Song has already passed his medical test and has even had a public photo session with the President of Barcelona Sandro Rosell.
Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova is an avid fan of Alex Song’s versatility in the midfield. Tito Vilanova foresees Alex Song partnering up with Sergio Busquets as defensive midfielder. Alex Song can also provide support to Barcelona’s attacking midfielder’s like Thiago Alcantara, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.
“[Alex Song] can provide us with a lot of things. He's very good, he recovers the ball well and then can do good things with it,” Tito Vilanova said.
“[Sergio] Busquets can't play every game of the season so Song will be a great addition," he said. "And he can also play in the centre of the defense. With him we'll have more alternatives [because] he can play in three different positions.”
Alex Song is Barcelona’s second signing this summer. Their first signing was Jordi Alba from Valencia. Arsenal lost their captain and world class midfielder Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona last year.
Arsene Wenger could face a midfield calamity at Arsenal following Alex Song’s departure. With Jack Wilshere out of action till October, Arsene Wenger is expected to sign a midfielder before the summer transfer window ends.
Arsene Wenger is looking into bring Real Madrid’s out of favor midfielder Nuri Sahin to the Emirates.
