Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has revealed that Arsenal had in pursuit of Mesut Ozil for months, but it was only on Saturday that they were made aware of Real Madrid’s intention to sell the attacking midfielder. It is believed that Ozil himself was unwilling to move out of Bernabeu until the final hours of the transfer window.

The 24-year-old Germany international admits he saw himself with Real Madrid in the future and needed some convincing before deciding to leave the club for more action. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was probably shocked beyond belief upon learning that Ozil was for sale. Details of Ozil’s transfer saga have revealed that Wenger didn’t even time to travel to Madrid to conclude the transfer. In fact, the Frenchman had to pick up his phone and directly call Ozil and persuade him to join the Gunners.

That’s right! Wenger convinced Ozil to leave Real Madrid for Arsenal over the phone. As matter of fact once Wenger learned he could make a swoop for Ozil, he left preparations for the derby against Tottenham Hotspur to concentrate on the transfer. Meanwhile, Gazidis took the earliest possible flight out of London to Madrid to seal the deal.

Gazidis’ delegation included Dick Law (Arsenal’s contract negotiator) doctor Gary O’Driscoll (supervisor for the medical test). Ozil’s appearance in the transfer market also attracted interest from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but the coveted midfielder snubbed the opportunity to join a big club having won the trust of a manager who trusted in him.

Ozil was fan-favorite at Real Madrid and having been brought under Florentino Perez and Zindine Zidane meant Ozil was destined for a big name at the club. However, lack of trust from managers and limited exposure coerced Ozil into losing faith in his childhood club.

“At the weekend, I was certain that I would stay at Real Madrid but afterwards I realized that I did not have the faith from the coach or the bosses,” Ozil told reporters. “I am a player who needs this faith. Wenger gives me the faith and I can develop further. I know what I can do and I know that I could make the grade with any club in the world because I am so convinced in myself.”

Real Madrid players such as Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Sami Khedira have expressed shock over Ozil’s decision to join Arsenal. Clearly, Ozil was a promising star, but Real Madrid’s inability to show trust and put faith in Ozil lost the club a talented young midfielder.
