Arsenal confirm signing Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil
After facing a lot of heat during the preseason for lack lustrous results and inability to attract big players, it appeared as if Arsene Wenger will end his transfer campaigns with acceptance of futility, but the Frenchman has managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat. The last-minute signing Mesut Ozil will bring smiles to the face of Arsenal fans, who have been lambasting against Wenger for not signing any players during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal and Real Madrid didn’t confirm the transfer till a day after the transfer window expired, but now it can be confirmed that the German attacking midfielder has been bought for a club record of £42.5 million. The deadline day transfer is Arsenal’s third signing of the summer and first where Wenger has actually spent some money.
According to reports Ozil has inked a five-year-contract with Arsenal. The 24-year-old’s salary status hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it is believed that he will be taking a pay cut following his move from Real Madrid. Only last week, Ozil told reporters that he intended to remain at Real Madrid, but speaking to them on international duty Ozil changed statements.
Ozil claims his desire was always to join a Premier League club and that he needed trust from the club where he played.
“At that time [the press conference on Wednesday], I was convinced I'd stay at Real Madrid,” Ozil told dfb.tv. “I soon realized the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] and those responsible no longer placed trust in me. I am player who needs trust and I felt that at Arsenal. That's why I made the switch.”
Despite scathing criticism on Wenger from Arsenal fans, there is a large group of supporters still chanting “In Wenger We Trust”. Ozil sided with sentiments, whilst revealing that he only needed a telephonic conversation with Wenger to convince to play for Arsenal.
“We had a long chat on the phone and he told me about his plans. He trusts me and that's what I need as a player,” Ozil said. “Arsene Wenger places his trust in me and I can further myself. I want to be 100% fit for the World Cup.
“I know what potential I have and I would have come on top at every club in the world, I know that because I am convinced of myself. I am just looking forward to the new challenge and the new coach. I am also looking forward to Premier League.”
Ozil will be Arsenal’s third German player in the squad with Wenger adding Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker in the past. Ozil told reporters that he was eager to link up with his compatriots and was eager to bring out his best for Arsenal.
“I have already heard about their fantastic fans, the city is great, the team is super class and I am just looking forward to it,” Ozil added.
