Arsene Wenger can finally ease up on the frowns because Arsenal’s injury crisis has eased up. The North London club was facing defensive injury crisis for the last couple of weeks. The injury crisis had severely affected their form in the English Premier League where they fell from the fourth spot to the sixth.
With both full backs out for weeks, the Gunners were left stranded on the field. Their fluent passing game play became filled with breaks and Wenger was left pulling his hair once again. Now, right back Barcary Sagna is close on the heels of recovery and left back Kieran Gibbs is also close to regaining full fitness. Both men have started training with the squad and are expected to feature in next week’s encounters.
Arsenal had been without a proper full back for over a month now. This had forced Wenger to play the likes of Francis Coquelin and Thomas Vermaelen on the defensive wings. However, with Sagna and Gibbs return to squad Arsenal’s defense will once again have the semblance of solidity.
Arsenal are about to enter the make-or-break period of their season, where they have to catch up points in order to acquire a top four spot in the English Premier League. In Europe, they are scheduled to meet AC Milan in Champions League. Wenger will have his fingers crossed to evade any kind of injuries till then.
Arsenal struggled through January as they played without a stable full back. The Gunners are four games without a victory in the English Premier League, having lost three of those games consecutively. The defeat against Manchester United clearly highlighted Arsenal’s weak areas of defense. During the match Arsenal’s full backs were horribly exposed.
Now, Sagna and Gibbs comeback will determine their fate for next year’s Champions League action. Manchester City and Manchester Untied have anything but qualified for Champions League. Tottenham Hotspur has done so too. The competition remains for the fourth spot and the contenders are Chelsea, New Castle United, Liverpool and of course Arsenal.
