Arsenal ready to bring Victor Valdes from Barcelona for £10m
Arsenal are ready to splash £10 million on Barcelona’s out of favor goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Premier League leaders Manchester United are battling Arsenal for the rights to the Spain international.
After talks with Barcelona broke down in early January, Victor Valdes confirmed he was going to leave the Catalan giants when his contract expires in 2014. The Spaniard hasn’t officially handed in his transfer request, but if another club approaches with an offer Barcelona would be ready to negotiate a deal.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has put his faith in Wojciech Szczesny to keep clean sheets, but the youngster’s inconsistent form is forcing the Frenchman to seek other options. Liverpool’s unsettled goalkeeper Pepe Reina could also move into Arsenal.
Qualifying into the Champions League is very important if Arsenal want to acquire the services of hot-shot goalkeeper. Presently, the Champions League seems like a luxury Arsenal won’t be able to capture this season.
Arsene Wenger has beckoned his team to bounce back in the Premier League, but they are still four points away from fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal’s attack is under-fire for not coming up to expectations.
The French boss of the Emirates is also at risk of losing his captain Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona. The Catalan giants have already stolen two big players from the Arsenal squad in the past two years.
It will be interesting to finally see Arsenal steal a player from Barcelona, i.e. if Victor Valdes decides on joining the North Londoners. Bringing in a new goalkeeper at Arsenal would increase competition for the first-team, something Arsene Wenger hopes will improve the performance of his Polish goalkeeper.
At 22, Wojciech Szczesny still has a lot to learn. Moreover, this is only his first season as Arsenal’s No. 1 choice, a decision that was made because of the lack of goalkeepers at the club. Therefore, it might seem odd but Arsene Wenger could make Victor Valdes his new No. 1 choice between the sticks at Arsenal.
