England international Ashley Cole has signed in a new one-year contract extension with Chelsea after months of intense negotiations. The world class defender, who has been linked to an away move since the summer transfer window, had been linked to a couple of top notch European clubs in the few weeks.

The left back was on the verge of making a shocking exit from Stamford Bridge after negotiations for a new a contract broke down. Chelsea refused to agree to the demands of Ashley Cole, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

It has now been announced that Ashley Cole will play under a Blues’ shirt till the end of next season. According to insiders at the London club, Ashley Cole put pen on paper Monday.

“I am pleased I will be starting my eighth season at Chelsea. I have great memories here and I enjoy coming to training every day. The staff are amazing and I enjoy training with the lads,” Ashley Cole told Chelsea’s official website.

“I have been able to fulfill nearly all my ambitions at Chelsea. I have won the Champions League, the league, I have won FA Cups here but of course you don't want to stop winning trophies and being at a big club, you are always fighting to win a trophy.

“Being here for seven years and being at Arsenal before that playing for trophies, you never lose that hunger. I wanted to stay at Chelsea because we are always fighting and challenging for trophies. That desire and the will to want to win things have not gone.”

Ashley Cole had been one of hottest transfer prospects in the football market this fall. The former Arsenal defender would have been allowed to directly negotiate with clubs for a new deal after the winter transfer window. Reportedly, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona were evaluating a bid for the veteran.

Chelsea would have been forced to lose Ashley Cole for free during the summer if the England star refused to agree to a transfer or a new contract. Ashley Cole, who has made 293 appearances for Chelsea, has won the Champions League, the Premier League, League Cup and the FA Cup four times in seven successful years at Stamford Bridge.
