Atletico Madrid boss Simeone opens door for Fernando Torres’ return
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has paved the way for Fernando Torres to return to his former club. Rife rumors suggest Diego Simeone might allow Chelsea a swap deal, which would see cash and Fernando Torres arrive at Atletico Madrid while the in-form Colombian hit-man Radamel Falcao goes the other way.
Fernando Torres, who joined Chelsea from Liverpool in a deal worth £50 million, has been unable to match his former form at Stamford Bridge. Not even the arrival of his former boss Rafael Benitez has set the path straight for Fernando Torres. It appears as if Fernando Torres will be forced to make a summer exit at the end of the season.
“Fernando Torres is currently playing for another team and we have to wait for the season to finish and decide which of the available players could come here and do a good job,” Diego Simeone was quoted by the Spanish media outlet Marca.
“Fernando knows about the club’s history, what it means to play here and I don’t need to speak about his ability. We were team-mates. I know how important he can be.”
Diego Simeone is unsure of whether Fernando Torres’ arrival will come at the cost of Radamel Falcao, but the manager certainly hopes that his Colombian striker plans to extend his stay at Atletico Madrid.
“I’m not Falcao and I’m not his agent,” Diego Simeone said. “I’m the manager and have the utmost respect for him, because he gave me so much at River Plate and has done the same here.
“He always gives his all and I really respect players who do that, but everyone makes their own decisions in life. Every person is different, and we have to respect each other. Those who stay are always going to be the best.”
Fernando Torres, who has been without a goal in11 of Chelsea’s last Premier League outings, was dropped from Spain’s squad by coach Vicente Del Bosque. If the Spaniard doesn’t pick up his form soon he might be benched at Stamford Bridge as well.
