Down and under, Real Madrid will need a miracle at Santiago Bernabeu if they desire to reach the final of the Champions League. Defender Sergio Ramos admits that hopes of entering the Champions League final are bleak.

Real Madrid suffered a shocking 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. With this victory, Borussia Dortmund have already set one foot in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Four goals from Robert Lewandowski made Real Madrid’s impregnable wall of defense look like a pile of rubble. On the other side of the field, Cristiano Ronaldo was able to score once, which means Real Madrid still has a chance of entering the Champions League final.

Sergio Ramos denies claims that Real Madrid underestimated their opponents. The Spain international admits his side faces a steep uphill battle to reach the Champions League final, but the task at hand wasn’t completely impossible.

“We were lacking in attitude and I point to myself first in that assessment,” Sergio Ramos said. “It will be very difficult in the return leg at home but we must remain confident and look to react.

“When the draw for the semi-finals was made a lot of people thought this was going to be easy for us but this is a German team we are talking about; they are a great side.”

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s rising young defender Raphael Varane lauded Borussia Dortmund’s four-goal hero Robert Lewandowski. The French defender also confessed that Real Madrid had performed abysmally in all departments against Borussia Dortmund.

“We didn't expect such a result. We expected a much more positive result,” Raphael Varane said. “We approached it with plenty of ambition. We fell to a very aggressive team, who were compact and gave us no space. Lewandowski played a great game and we failed to stop him. It's more a team failure than an individual one.”

The second leg of the battle between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will take place on 30 April at the Santiago Bernabeu.
