Auburn coach Gene Chizik has been fired just two years after winning the national championship, reports ESPN.Blog Photo - Auburn Football: Gene Chizik Fired

Chizik’s contract was terminated on Sunday after the football program finished its worst season in in 60 years, compiling a 3-9 (0-8 SEC) record and losing to rival Alabama, 49-0.

"After careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of our football program, I have recommended that Coach Chizik not be retained," Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said in a statement. "President (Jay) Gogue has accepted my recommendation. Earlier this morning, I informed Gene that he will not return as head coach."

Chizik is well-known for his success with quarterback Cam Newton, who led the Tigers to a 14-0 record and a BCS National Championship win in 2010.

However, without the star player under center, Chizik was just 19-19 (7-17 SEC) as coach.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the way this season turned out and I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure," Chizik said. "In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made."

Auburn was not competitive in many games this year, including a 63-21 loss to Texas A&M that featured a Tiger defense being ripped apart for 671 yards – a new school record.

It seemed as if the program was going nowhere fast, especially with rumors recently surfacing that the NCAA is investigating a potential recruiting violation.

On November 9, there was a report that Auburn was preparing to replace Chizik. Louisville coach Charlie Strong, Arkansas State coach (and former Auburn OC) Gus Malzahn, and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart are potential candidates.
