Chizik, Auburn Turn to True Fresman QB This Saturday
Chizik announced the decision during his Tuesday press conference following a nice performance in relief of injured Clint Moseley and ineffective Kiehl Frazier, completing 6-of-9 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns while adding 71 on the ground.
"After reviewing film, he really played well," Chizik said, according to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. "So that's the decision we've made. We'll forge ahead with that.
“He was up here all day yesterday watching film … not that that's the first day he's done that,” he continued. “Our team has a high level of respect for how he prepares and goes about his business, not just in the classroom but on the field.”
At this point in time, playing a New Mexico State team that matches Auburn in record (1-7) doesn't really help out Chiznik's chances of coming back in 2013. A win is all but expected and a loss could potentially pull the plug before season's end.
Sending a true freshman into the battlefield with your job on life support isn't usually the most alluring idea, but it's all Chiznik has at this point.
And in a season where you're bowl ineligible before November even hits, it becomes an all-or-nothing type of situation.
