Australian Casino Association becomes Australasian Casino Association!
by CASINODIARIO
6/26/08

According to their official website, the Australian Casino Association was founded to represent the interests of the Australian casino industry. Today, the membership of the association consists of the thirteen casinos that operate in Australia as well as SKYCITY Auckland, Christchurch Casino and Dunedin Casino in New Zealand.

However, what you only must know is that the ACA currently represents the Australian casino industry at a government and a community level. Because, at the national level, there is another kettle of fish, as the ACA addresses those legislative and regulatory issues that do or may have an impact on the industry, such as taxation, regulatory and tourism related issues.

Since, the ACA can actually provide a national approach to issues concerning the casino industry it’s in their power to make some changes. Recently, the members of the Australian Casino Association have voted to change the name of the association to Australasian Casino Association. They have motivated their decision saying that the change will reflect its 18 casino members better.

You might also find interesting to know the ACA is being fully administered by a National Council whose membership consists of the CEO or a representative of each casino member. Media sources said that the ACA’s National Office is in Canberra and the Executive Director looks after the day to day running of the association. You might not know that the Association has been in existence since 1992, when a group of casino operators in Australia decided that it was more effective to approach government as a united industry, than as separate entities.

During recent interviews, the executive director, Mr. Chris Downy said that today all 13 Australian casinos and five of New Zealand's casinos are members of the association. He said: "The name change reflects the membership base of the association and was a logical step to take."

Besides the rebranding maneuver, the Association has also moved its main office to Sydney, but still maintains its former office in Canberra, Australia's capital city.

The Australian casino business seems to be going really good, as each year, the country and New Zealand casinos attract over 56 million visitors, who spend over $AU3.6bn at Australian casino properties alone. So you can imagine the amount of money that is being sucked in…

The Australian casino industry is being regarded as part of the mass economy, as it provides a substantial contribution, attracting over $AU1bn in Australian and $AU94.7m in New Zealand government taxes and contributes $AU54.9m, combined to the Australian and New Zealand communities through sponsorship and support.

And when you think that the entire power lies in the hands of 18 people…it seems so simple! But it’s not!
