BCS Championship Game Live Thread: #1 Oklahoma Sooners Vs #2 Florida Gators
The College Football Season Ends Tonight, As A National Champion (Kinda) Is Crowned [Live Thread]
National Championship Game
Florida Gators Vs Oklahoma Sooners
8:00 PM EST On FOX

Finally, after what seems like an eternity of anticipation, we get to see a matchup of the two best teams two of the best teams in the country, with the two most recent Heisman Trophy winners leading their respective powerhouse offenses against some of the nation's elite defenses. Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford are both looking to send some big messages in this one.

There has been a ton of hype around this game for the past month and a half, since the two teams played their last games, which happened to be their respective conference championship games. Florida beat previously unbeaten Alabama 31-20, and Oklahoma took Missouri to the woodshed 62-21, for their 5th straight game with at least 60 points.

On of the questions surrounding this game is the health of Percy Harvin, the Gators stud WR. He's their most dynamic skill player, and provides Tim Tebow with an excellent target for big plays. If he plays at 100%, he'll be extremely dangerous. If not, the Sooners have a much better chance.

59% of FanIQ picked the Gators to win. But does it matter?

Due to the crazy system we have, it's hard to say that either of these teams are legitimate champions, unless we see a complete blowout by one of them.

Oklahoma already lost to Texas, who has a very legit claim that they were snubbed, and Florida beat Alabama by 11 in the SEC Championship game, who turned around and lost by 14 to Utah, who finished undefeated. The Florida-Alabama game was actually closer than the score indicated, while the Utah win in the Sugar Bowl was never really in question. So although Florida would be favored in that game, who's to say that Utah couldn't take them?

After Texas' narrow win over an Ohio State team that got blown out by USC, the Trojans also can stake a claim to the National Championship.

So after this game, what happens? Someone will be crowned the BCS National Champion, but once again, we'll never really know if they're the legitimate champions. Looks like we'll have to just deal with it, because it's not changing any time soon.

So best of luck to the Gators and the Sooners. This game, regardless of the joke that is the BCS, is the biggest game of the year, bar none. Can Urban Meyer and the Gators win their 2nd championship in 3 years? Or will Bob Stoops and the Sooners end their BCS Bowl losing streak?

If you're watching the game, chat it up here or on the game page. And as always, enjoy the game!

The Gators are going to win the BCS National Championship! Tim Tebow is going to lead us to victory and pick apart the Sooner defense. Go Gators!

The game will come down to the health of Percy Harvin.  Both teams will put up numbers, that's a given.  If Harvin is healthy enough to be himself, Florida will win, if not Oklahoma should be able to outscore the Gators.  Both QB's will do their thing (Tebow rush, Bradford throw).  Harvin is a gamebreaker and will decide the winner.

Dream on. You'd be better off hoping for something like 44-39 ... or something.

I hope Bradford is sacked 20 more times.

Tebow doesn't have the arm strength to be an NFL quarterback.  He just showed it again.

I could be crazy, but does this game just seem like it's in slow motion to the rest of you, too?

1/8/09

I wasn't speaking about that necessarily, although that takes plenty of time too..talking about the actual game being played seems so slow to me, I can't explain it though.

First time I spotted Belichick smiling too, kinda creepy looking..

Brennamen also said he was the "unquestioned" leader in college football...is he kidding me? Tim Tebow is a great player, but those statements are baseless, shamefull, and are without merit.

Why Florida looks a little vulnerable to the run right now......well and the pass, good looking drive for Oklahoma

OU should be up by 6-10 points right now. Some of those cavalier bad decisions may come back to haunt them. Stoops is a great coach for blow-outs, less good for close strategic games.

I hate that call in their own territory going for the block. If it's closer to mid-field, then I could see it, but when it's an almost guarantee you have good to great field position, don't rush 5 guys and an easy personal foul.

How freakin' cruel would it be for Florida to somehow score one more TD and win the game 21-7.  Jub would win the TV and then have to watch replays of the game on it.

I'm trying not to listen to them.  On my way back from work I was listening to the ESPN radio broadcast of it.  They were pretty decent - I actually liked Herbstreit's contributions.

were all tied folks... I'm thinkin 24-21 Florida final.  Tebow rushes the next in, Bradford to Iglesias, then a Florida field goal at the buzzer.

It's not pretty and he may not be an NFL hall of famer, but I hope we all appreciate what a hell of a college football player (and guy) Tim Tebow is. I know ESPN and the media beats it to death, but seriously, the dude's a stud.

So a good win for Florida, great performance, but yet the announcers still manage to make me hurl..

"That might of been the first thing Tebow has ever done wrong in his life" after a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty...

"That might be the single most ridiculous statement ever" in reference to the Tebow comment of being the 4th best QB if he was in the Big 12...while Bradford, McCoy, and Harrell had looked so much better throughout the season..yup, ridiculous.

It's how badly the media beats it to death though that ticks me off the most. CBS is actually much more worse than anything ESPN has said about Tebow..and while he may be a stud and one of the best college players, it's still disgusting listening to others talk about him.

Ohio State wasn't even competitive in their 2 NC appearances. This game was a few plays away from being an OU victory. If the INT before halftime and the 4th down stop went the other way, OU could have won. I don't think you can really blame it on Stoops. I don't think there's anyone they could bring in who would do any better.

While the media isn't excused for getting on their knees, so to speak, they only do so because it's so rare that a star player has any degree of humility, and understands his influence on others.

At the risk of getting on my knees myself, I can somewhat understand the gushing. There's not a lot of college student-athletes like him. I respect him, in spite of his Gator-ness, and in spite of the horrible announcing that tends to follow him.

Anyways, that's my two cents on Tebow for tonight. I like the guy and wish there were more like him so that the media didn't have to treat it as such a big deal.

SEC teams play each other tougher than teams from other conferences.  I'm not taking anything away from Utah's win against Alabama, but Alabama wasn't playing the way they should because they had lost their chance at a championship.

That's obviously not unique to the SEC.  The fact remains that Utah hammered Alabama and Florida simply survived against the same team.

And also has a loss, at home, against Ole Miss..can't forget that little tidbit.

Heyhey1970 you are behind as far what the beloved BCS calls a CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. WHO held the Championship trophy?  Lets give Utah some applause for going undefeated in a subpar conference and beating a good Alabama team, but they were not invited to the big dance.

Well, the BCS still chooses who plays for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, CORRECT? Utah was not included , RIGHT?   Therfore they are not evailable for said championship, Right? Need I go on?

Only one team held the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY tonight and it was not Utah.

You deserve to celebrate.  Florida showed tonight that they're one of the good teams in college football.  They played hard and all you can do is beat the team you're scheduled to play.

It's not clear at all that they're better than Utah, so a split National Championship would be fair for everyone involved.

Until they clean up what we have for the national championship (a playoff) we have to deal with what the BCS calls out.

Yes they did lose to Ole Miss at home...and now everyone sees how good Ole Miss was.  They ended up 14th in the nation and beat Texas Tech soundly in their bowl game.

And USC lost on the road to #18 Oregon State.

What's the difference?

Oregon State isn't as good as Ole Miss.

And it was a road game, unlike the Gators who lost at home.

My point is, if you need to make excuses for a team, then maybe they're not as legit as you think.

I'm not making excuses...I'm saying that Florida's loss was to a tougher opponent...whether it was at home or not.

Yea never mind...Utah didn't have a tough schedule like all of the other teams ahead of them.

No...they should have scheduled powerful schools like Utah State and Weber State like Utah did huh?  All schools have a couple of weak non-conference schools on their schedule.
