It's offical: Gus Johnson has 'liked' Soccer on Facebook, and in doing so has paved the way for years of American soccer broadcasting greatness. This historic 'liking' came on the heels of Johnson's second game in the international spotlight, the final leg of the Real Madrid versus Manchester United Champions League fixture.
The fixture, which saw United squander a 1-0 lead after receiving a controversial red card, left Johnson both very elated and very confused.
"I'm very elated and very confused," Johnson proudly declared after witnessing the clash of two footballing giants in one of the world's most famous stadiums, Old Trafford. "I'm not entirely sure what happened out there on that 'pitch,' but I am certain about one thing-- I like soccer!"
And with that pronouncement, the smattering of soccer-supporters that exist throughout the U.S. (often referred to as Footy Tribes or Saturday Morning Alcoholics) erupted in jubilation. They had Gus on their side.
Johnson, who is being groomed by Fox to broadcast the 2018 World Cup, most likely World War III in 2022 and almost definitely the coming apocalypse in 2026, says he is determined to build on his Champions League experience by doing all he can to learn the ins and outs of the beautiful game. At this very moment, however, the very excitable Johnson is simply tweeting "Soccer!" as he has been for the past hour, and will continue to do so for the forseeable future.
