BREAKING: Troy Polamalu to cut his hair (and then auction it for a worthy cause)
Polamalu told the publication Stars & Stripes that he would submit to a haircut for the VFW Mane Event, "a nationwide movement to raise awareness of the issues our veterans face". The effort has raised nearly $200,000 for the VFW so far, and seems like a fantastic idea.
But be warned that Polamalu will not actually cut his hair in the traditional sense. The "good" folks at TMZ did some digging and found that Polamalu will have only a small amount of hair cut off. "A rep for Head & Shoulders -- which has a long-term endorsement deal with Polamalu, and even insured his mane for $1 million -- tells us the haircut will be more ceremonial than anything," TMZ reports.
Ceremonial or not, Polamalu is raising real money for a real worthy cause, one made even worthier by the fact that veterans have been returning from Iraq and Afghanistan in unprecedented numbers. The problems facing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are well documented.
"I started working with the VFW a couple years ago and have always had a lot of compassion for what veterans go through because of my wife’s grandfather, who I was close with.” Polamalu told the USA Today. ”She had two grandfathers who were veterans of war and a lot of my own family members [served in the military]. We learned a lot of crazy statistics regarding veterans – like 22 veterans commit suicide every day and that a large population of homeless people are veterans – so we’re doing what we can to help."
