Blog Photo - BREAKING: Troy Polamalu to cut his hairPittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has not cut his his gigantic Samoan 'fro in eleven years. (NOTE: The 'fro is not actually as large as depicted at left. That image is from a Head and Shoulders ad.) This Monday, though, Polamalu will cut his hair -- and for a worthy charitable case at that. Polamalu has agreed to cut his hair for a Veteran's Day fundraiser called the VFW Mane Event, wherein he will have his iconic hair cut for the first time in more than a decade.

Polamalu told the publication Stars & Stripes that he would submit to a haircut for the VFW Mane Event, "a nationwide movement to raise awareness of the issues our veterans face". The effort has raised nearly $200,000 for the VFW so far, and seems like a fantastic idea.

But be warned that Polamalu will not actually cut his hair in the traditional sense. The "good" folks at TMZ did some digging and found that Polamalu will have only a small amount of hair cut off. "A rep for Head & Shoulders -- which has a long-term endorsement deal with Polamalu, and even insured his mane for $1 million -- tells us the haircut will be more ceremonial than anything," TMZ reports.

The problems facing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are well documented.

"I started working with the VFW a couple years ago and have always had a lot of compassion for what veterans go through because of my wife’s grandfather, who I was close with.” Polamalu told the USA Today.  ”She had two grandfathers who were veterans of war and a lot of my own family members [served in the military]. We learned a lot of crazy statistics regarding veterans – like 22 veterans commit suicide every day and that a large population of homeless people are veterans – so we’re doing what we can to help."

If you're interested in doing what you can to help, you can donate to the VFW Mane Event and take in the event video below.

I'm glad he's just cutting a little off.  I don't give a f**k how you feel about the Steelers.  There's no denying #43 is a class act.
