When Boise State beat Oklahoma in that ridiculous 2007 Fiesta Bowl, it seemed to herald the dawn of the non-BCS schools playing in BCS bowls and being competitive. But, when you think about it, as great as that Fiesta Bowl was, if you replayed it 9 more times, Oklahoma probably would have won all of them. After all the jubilation over Boise State and talk of how non-BCS school could now absolutely play on college football's grandest stage, we were then gifted a year later with Hawaii, who got beaten senseless by a far superior Georgia team. I still remember watching that game at a bar. I went to grab a drink at kickoff, and when I got back, Hawaii was down 87-0. Not that I was overly surprised. I remembered watching Hawaii come back against San Jose St. late in the season. Seriously, if you have to come back late in a game against San Jose St., you don't belong anywhere near a BCS bowl game.
This year's team to fit the Boise St./Hawaii mold was BYU. They had the nation's longest win streak thanks to steamrolling vaunted programs like Eastern Washington, San Diego State, and Northern Iowa. So the debate was on, should they play in a BCS game if they finished out this season undefeated? Well, much thanks goes out to the Thursday Night College Football Curse and the TCU Horned Frogs for utterly destroying the fraud that was BYU so we don't have to have another awful BCS bowl.
BYU got manhandled 32-7 while Max Hall saw his slim Heisman hopes get deep sixed thanks to his abysmal 22 of 42 night with two picks against the nation's best defense - statistically speaking, of course.
But seriously, we need to create some kind of rule that prevents non-BCS schools from playing in BCS bowls unless they play at least one legit out of conference opponent. Think that's harsh? I don't. Because I believe that had Hawaii played in the SEC last year, they wouldn't have won a single game. Would you send a team that didn't win a single conference game to a BCS game? Of course you wouldn't.
BYU did beat UCLA 59-0, but UCLA was quickly revealed to be awful beyond belief (primarily because Tennessee was revealed to be beyond awful beyond belief). BYU also barely beat Washington 28-27. That'd be great, but there are high school teams that can beat Washington. I'm just not impressed with either of those games. I think if you want to be taken seriously, you need to play a better team, like an Oregon or a Kansas. Once you win a game like that, then we'll talk.
But at least for right now, I'm glad we don't have to hear about BYU anymore. Because if they had gone through the season undefeated, they would have wasted a BCS game for all of us.
