A Catfight Broke Out At The BYU vs. New Mexico Women's Soccer Game

Very rarely will we ever bring you women's college soccer highlights, this actually being the first. But when we do bring you highlights for sports like this, you know there is a good reason.

The New Mexico Lobos and BYU Cougars were battling it out in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament, nothing out of the ordinary there. BYU had a one goal lead when things just started going crazy.

Girls were elbowing and kicking each other like they were in the octagon at an UFC event.

The main culprit in all of this was number 15 Elizabeth Lambert of New Mexico. After her ponytail take down onBYU's Kassidy Shumway, she later followed that up by tripping a BYU player at the edge of the box, resulting in one of her New Mexico teammates "accidentally" kicking the ball right in her face.

She wasn't done there, later in the game as a BYU player and her were fighting over the ball, Lambert looked more like Steelers great Jack Lambert as she socked another New Mexico player right in the face.

BYU ended up winning the game 1-0 and advancing to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament but Jim Lampley scored it 10-9 for BYU.

The BYU players were playing just as dirty and all of you on this board want to side with them.  Take a good look at the tape.  They were just as dirty.

11/8/09   |   solarcableguy

Kassidy Shumay got what she deserved.  If you were watching the video she was trying to pull Lambert's shorts up her hooha right before getting decked.  If she is going to play dirty then she should expect it in return.

A lot more of it is like this than you think. Give soccer a chance and you'll be surprised by how physical it can be.

You know, I'm, like, a dude, and I like that sort of thing, but that's really beside the point, here. The fact is, the rules are supposed to prevent this. And all the people talking about this making them want to watch the sport is really more that most people who don't watch soccer, or any game for that matter, just don't understand the sport. Europeans didn't understand football for years, but now look at it's popularity over there. A while back, the Queen came to America and saw a baseball game, and the President was explaining it to her as it went along. It's not a matter of who gets into fights, but how well you know the game.

I want this girl on my team any day. Physical play is the best. The hair pulling does go over the line, but the rest of the tackles, getting your elbow in the other players back, standing on their foot, a tough tackle... I'm good with all of that.

Plus it was pretty hot to see a girl that cares about winning so much that she'd actually go that crazy.

I agree, i play soccer, and the very first foul should have been yellow, the second one was a second yellow and witch becomes a red, she should have been gone in the first 10 minutes, yes the girl from BYU elbowed her, but you don't need to attack every single player on the team. everything she did was unacceptable. She should be gone for the season.

THAT's SO WRONG! It was niggly and funny until that hair pulling stunt. Gonna be a whole lotta "door knocking" in New Mexico soon...don't mess with those Latter Day Saints

wow how was she not red-carded and ejected from the game? i've seen better referees in the NFL and that's saying a lot. i understand she was pissed cause she got elbowed in the gut but if you're gonna get back at the other players for playing dirty don't go down to their level. instead just beat them at the game itself.

11/6/09   |   soccer_chic9   |   3 respect

That's exactly correct they are calling a cat fight and on CNN in the morning they were saying she was "FEARLESS" excuse me but I don't think that is the correct word to describe her it's "PSyCHO" anyway I do hope that people on TV start expressing themselves in a way that it doesn't encourage her but instead make her ashamed of herself.  When I saw when she just punched the girl in the back I was amazed at how she lost it but then when I saw everything else she did I was mad! It's true what someone said about the coaches having some fault b/c obviously this girl plays like that b/c the coaches and the ref's let her otherwise she wouldn't be giving this kind of ridiculous sportsmanship. Freakin suspend her

11/6/09   |   freekick   |   4 respect

I have seen nearly 300 girls youth soccer games in the last 12 years, and 20 DIII women's college games live, and quite a few televised D1 games. I have a daughter who plays, and I generally love women's soccer. In that time, I have seen probably 30 red card offenses and exactly ZERO red cards given, and I can't tell you how many uncalled yellow card offenses. There were at least three yellow cards in this video, all of which were dangerous enough to injure the player. I love physical games, but when a ref allows physical play that increases the potential for serious injury, it is inexplicable. Watch some EPL games, folks, and get a sense what should be called...a hip check on someone going full tilt toward the box is a card...all body contact without any ball contact...I've been told refs often don't call cards at college games because they are heavily dependent on coaches for their names being included on home game referee lists, and so they don't want to piss off the coaches. I agree with the posters; that young woman should sit for a portion of her senior season ... dangerous plays are often reviewed in the EPL and suspensions given after the fact based on video coverage...a three-game suspension would be justified here. Do the right thing, MOuntain Conference.

don't f*** with the mormons. she may have beaten them down, but who won in the end? byu did.

11/6/09   |   chrisc11   |   1 respect

She is probably an ODP player - they love players like that.  This is completely the referees fault. The referee needs to take control of the game from the beginning. The first elbow from the BYU player and then this "player"s push should have brought some words of warning from the referee. From that point on any dirty play(not just regular fouls) the ponytail pull and the ball to the face should have warranted a yellow and then red card and she should be suspended. I also blame her coach. She obviously plays that way any time she can get away with it and the coach probably encourages it.

11/6/09   |   thardison   |   62 respect

I agree with you 1000%! after I veiw the video I wanted to haul off the field straight to jail! playing sports is to have fun and not to hurt someone. I don't buy it when the player said it was an accident. yeah, you just accident yourself in jail.

(Edited by half_baked)

I've played a lot of soccer (truthfully it should be called football) and most of it was competitive in nature. You'd be surprised what people get away with and the reason they get away with it is that they watch the referees and do stuff when the refs aren't watching.

This Lambert chick is psycho though...there is no way she should be allowed to continue to play.

11/6/09   |   soccer_chic9   |   3 respect

I've been playing for over 20 years and this is by far the dirtiest and stupidest girl I have ever seen!  Guys are so stupid the ones that are saying this is cool or sexy.  No it's not cool she could have paralyzed that girl that she pulled from the pony tail.  I really hope they kick her out and press charges b/c she's not okay from the head seriously

11/6/09   |   thardison   |   62 respect

I don't mind seeing them get into it, because its part of the game. the game is play that you will get a few cuts here and there, some bumps and bruise is okay but not to cripple or disable another player. I watch the girl soccer when ever ESPN air it.

11/6/09   |   TheRoss   |   356 respect

She should definitely be suspended, and that was terrible.

That being said, that is what it takes for me to want to watch women's soccer.

11/6/09   |   thardison   |   62 respect

number 15 should been thrown from the game after she pull the girl down to the ground by her ponytail. then she kick into the face of a falling player, that is unsportman like conduct!! I am surprise that the whole BYU team went after her. I know I would rally my team member to go on all out assult!!

11/6/09   |   ary201   |   213 respect

Not sure why that was so awesome. Kicking a ball into another girl's face?

11/6/09   |   joncool65   |   7 respect

not sure why she was still in the game, after grabbing some girl's ponytail and pulling her to the ground.  Trouble is there's so much diving in soccer no one knows when you're really hurt.

I just saw this on SportsCenter. I was completely on Lambert's side after the BYU player elbowed her. Then some replays were being shown where she was being aggressive with the other team and I liked that and I didn't fault her for it. But as the highlight went on, she is shown ripping an opposing player down to the ground by her ponytail, very dangerously whipping her head back. THEN she swipes at an opposing player's face!

I went from being on her side to wanting some punishment laid down on her within a matter of seconds. I rarely call for punishment because I know what it's like to get caught up in the moment and I believe that a lot of the punishments these days are excessive, but this is one exception I will make. Almost everyone learns from a little suspension, but wow this girl might need something more than just that. New Mexico's season is over, but Lambert is a junior and should see some suspension handed down next year.
