Bad Idea Jeans: Orioles Fire Leo Mazzone

Just when you thought the Baltimore Orioles couldn't become a bigger joke, they fire pitching coach Leo Mazzone.

Now, Mazzone's tenure in Baltimore could at best be called inconsistent. During his two run, Erik Bedard became one of the best pitchers in baseball, while Jeremy Guthrie had a year that put him in contention for Rookie of the Year. However, veteran after veteran, from Rodrigo Lopez to Bruce Chen to Steve Trachsel, were mediocre at best. The bullpen was terrible, and many young players got hurt. Finally, there was Daniel Cabrera. Lauded as the man who will fix Cabrera, D-Cabs remained a walk machine under Mazzone, and in fact got worse.

Still, I just don't get it. How are you going to find someone better than Leo Mazzone? Especially since he wanted to stay. I understand that Dave Tremblay wants his own coaching staff. I don't blame him for that. However, is letting go the best in the business a good idea? I'm not really sure.

What I do think is this: 1.) Have the Orioles finally hit rock bottom? and 2.) Hitting coach Terry Crowley better be next.
