Barack Obama Will Take Steps To Create A College Football Playoff System
Obama: "I'm Going To Throw My Weight Around" To Get A College Football Playoff
I think we're all familiar with the fact that Barack Obama said he was in favor of a college football playoff when he was interviewed by Chris Berman on Monday Night Football the day before the election. And for people who would like to see that happen, the good news is that Obama's words appear to not have been hot wind.

In an interview for 60 Minutes that will appear on TV tonight, Obama was again asked about a college football playoff and he didn't mince his words.

"If you've got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses, there's no clear decisive winner. We should be creating a playoff system."

"It would add three extra weeks to the season," he said at the conclusion of a wide-ranging interview. "You could trim back on the regular season. I don't know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this. So, I'm going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it's the right thing to do."

A president who will throw his weight around to make a college football playoff happen? Something tells me his approval rating might hit 90% if he can pull it off. Seriously, Obama will probably get more praise for that than if he solve the problems in Iraq and the Middle East.

Now for all you people out there who make the lame excuse that the college football season is a playoff system and we don't need a formal system, please, just shut up. You sound stupid when you make this argument. You're like the people who refused to believe the earth revolved around the sun.

It's not hard at all to see why we need a playoff. In fact, I only need to give one example. Right now, Texas and Florida both have one loss. Texas played a murderous slate of games recently but suffered a last second loss to the current #2 in the land on the road. Florida, meanwhile, lost to Ole Miss, a team that hadn't won an SEC game in like 3 years - at home. Yet who is everyone crowing for to be in the National Championship? Florida, of course. Why? Because they were fortunate enough to lose early in the season.

That's no playoff. That's a damn joke. No one in their right mind can sit in front of me and argue that Florida has a more legitimate claim to playing in the National Championship then does Texas. It doesn't matter what you say to argue for Florida, my response will always be "you lost to Ole Miss."

My point here is not that Texas is better than Florida, my point is that when you think logically about all of this, the only solution is a playoff.

And if Obama can make it happen, so much the better.

Obama eyes college football playoff [SI]

President-Elect Obama should back-up his college football playoffs with his first appoitment- Secretary of College Football Mr. Lee Corso!! The end of every cabinet meeting would end up with "not so fast my friends"!!

Now THAT is change I can believe in.

The sad thing is that it would take a President-elect to pull this off.  Screw you college presidents and Big10/Pac10/Rose Bowl.

WOW that would be great, but I think there are more pressing matters in the country right now that need to be addressed. Don't get me wrong, I would love for him to make this happen, but considering the state of the economy right now, this should take precedent over College football matters. I don't have a job right now, this is more serious to me moreso if Penn State gets into a playoff game or not

I think we all know this is not priority #1, but that said, I would love to see it as well. Approval ratings go through the roof if he succeeds on this.

Economy? Nah we need College Football Playoffs.

He would have said that he would put a chicken in every garage and a car in every pot if he thought it would get votes.  Enjoy the thought but don't get too excited.

I agree that there are more pressing issues than a college playoff.... but this will seriously take up about 10 min. of his time to set up.

I just saw him on "60 Min", he is a very good speaker, unlike our current President who constantly makes a fool out of himself everytime he opens his mouth! Who will the comedians be able to make fun of once Bush is gone?  I thought it was cute how Obama said he was gonna "throw his weight around a bit" concerning College football. I like Obama, I hope that people give him a chance to do some things before they turn on him, it took us a while to get into the economic toilet we are in, so it is going to take time to get us out as well. I have confidence that he will be a good President. Let's face it, Bush hasn't set the bar very high though, has he?

alright i wasnt gonna say this but....i lied.....

of COURSE there is more pressing issues at hand right now, nobody in america gave a flying F when they elected a retard for a second term...now everyone complains.....he cant do anything right now but get his ducks in a row and give us hope.....how many people on this site got happy when he said that????

ME ! ME ! ME !

god people give em a break, besides this is a sport site....do we really need to add EVERYTHING HE PLANS, JUST to have a poll about the college football playoffs? Like ol Beerstud said he places a few calls and speaks about it on CNN, thats all the time he spends doing it. IF he doesnt have other people to do it for him....can we skip the this isnt important crap and get back to being excited about probable playoffs?

Hahaa ironically enough having a playoff system for college football would actually be worse for college football as bowl games and rivalries would mean less and thus draw in less fans meaning that people are spending less money in that area.  To the poster.... Saying that people would be retarded or stupid for arguing that the BCS system works, and then proving why it works.... I didn't get your point behind that.  As of right now Texas is ranked higher than Florida in the BCS standings which makes it sound more like you support the BCS given your argument.  I'm all for a playoff system, but I do not want to see my college football season shortened.  The argument by the BCS that the players wouldn't be able to handle a longer season is dumb considering how long seasons are for other sports as well as high school and FCS schools in the same sport.  Just my two cents.  We do need some sort of playoff, but I am not for shortening my team's season so that I can watch Utah get stomped on by Texas Tech.  We don't so much need a playoff system as we need smarter people making the decision on who goes to the NC game.  Even with a playoff system Utah would be taking the place of a better team like Georgia.  I don't think Boise State or Utah would stand a chance going head to head against Georgia, yet look at the standings.  That's where the problem is.  It has nothing to do with playoff or no playoff.  That's just part of college football, as college football fans we'll never be satisfied.

the problem is that with Obama's exact proposed plan of shortening the season and having a top 8 playoff.  We would be ending the season essentially now or next week but seeing that Utah has one game left they would be top 8 in the BCS standings which are the standings, I'm assuming we're planning on using for this playoff system.  So in Obama's exact plan, Utah would be going up against Texas Tech if we had a playoff this year...... playoff's aren't going to fix anything if we do them that way, we need a new way to determine who the best teams are, plain and simple really.

I don't see how it would shorten the season.... bowl season is over a month long as it is and that's long enough for a 16 team tourny for the NC.  I also don't see how it would destroy rivalries either, the NFL still has rivalries as well as a playoff system as does every other college sport.  Duke and UNC is a huge basketball rivalry that's always significant.  And people wouldn't show up to a rivalry game???? Top teams fill the stands when they play a Div-2 nobody, why all the sudden with a playoff system would people not show up to a rivalry game?  The Army-Navy game sells out every..... friggin..... year and both of those teams are terrible.... they show up for the rivalry not because there's no playoff system.

And here's an example of how crappy the BCS is.... Florida lost AT HOME to a team that hasn't been to a bowl game since Eli was playing there while being ranked ahead of USC, who lost to a team on the road that has been to a bowl game for the last 3 years.  Oregon State is a better team than Ole Miss, USC was ranked #1 for several weeks, USC lost on the road..... yet they're behind Florida in the BCS rankings?!?  They need to drop the C because all the BCS is is BS!!!  LONG LIVE THE PLAYOFF SYSTEM!!!!!

I understand your points, though not many of them are valid.  Obama went out of his way to make the statement that his idea for the system would include shortening the regular season.  Read the article and you'll see what I'm referring to.  I'm assuming the reason he brought this up is because some BCS supporters are claiming that the players shouldn't play any more games than they already play so his response is that we should shorten the regular season.  The reason it would destroy rivalries is that many rivals may end up playing eachother twice.  This year it's not so much a problem, but for the sake of argument, let's say Georgia was to make it into the top 8.  Florida Georgia now play the Florida Georgia rivalry twice in one year...... Florida wins the first one, Georgia wins the second one..... who's the better team this year?  Florida wins both times?  Well, who didn't see that coming it already happened once, why did we have to watch that again?  Football can in no way whatsoever be compared to basketball so I won't even go down that line.  The outlook that top teams can fill the stand any given day is a very elitest perspective on it.  The fact of the matter is that there aren't that many "top teams"  that actually do fill the stands.  Out of the 119/120 BCS "contestants" how many do you think fill the stands against FCS schools?  Many of the smaller schools need a good portion of that income that they can make from another home game or that one "Big Bowl" game.

As far as Florida vs USC, it looks about right to me.  Florida lost to Ole Miss (doesn't matter when the last time they went to a bowl was seeing as how college football is supposed to be about this year and you are bringing up history as if it were at all relevant.  You are making the same mistake that too many of the BCS voters make constantly which is why the system sucks in the first place) by 1 point while having, I believe it was a field goal, blocked as time expired..... USC lost to Oregon State by 6.  Greater margin of loss.  Florida has also fought through a much tougher schedule and other than the one loss on the record has yet to have an even somewhat close encounter.  USC on the other hand has had a little bit of a lighter schedule and has had closer games against teams which they shouldn't have.  Seeing that Florida is 4th and USC is 6th I'd say both teams are comparitively right where they should be.    By making the mistake of judging teams by the history of the program, I don't fully understand why you don't support the BCS because that's exactly what they do.  If that is to be the case we might as well eliminate 110 of the teams in college football and take the top 9 or 10 historically and stack them up there.  Who cares that Michigan is one of the worst teams in the nation this year.  Throw them up in the mix there.

wow, just realized how badly I messed up my original statement.  It was supposed to say, "Ironically enough a playoff system would be worse for the economy."  instead of  "would be worse for college football."  Kind of a big mistake given the argument I made after, hahaa.

I can't speak for all programs because I only have season tickets at the University of Oregon, and Autzen Stadium sells out every week regardless if the opponent is Washington or Oregon State (our biggest rivals) or someone like Portland State.  I assume it's like that everywhere else that the fans give a crap about their teams.

I didn't see that Obama wanted to shorten the season, that's pretty stupid if you ask me.  The easiest solution seems to be to keep the regular season how it is, get rid of the bowl season and have a 16 team tournament.  I brought up other sports because in other sports teams generally play the entire conference more than once, and the rivalries are just as strong (in some cases stronger) the second time around.  Why would it be any different in football???  It obviously wouldn't.

The only reason Florida is ranked higher is because of an East Coast bias that poll voters have.  Look at the rankings, there are very few teams ranked that play west of Texas and it's like that every year (which plays into the whole 'Florida plays a tougher schedule' argument).  Voters don't even watch Pac-10 games because they're on after bedtime.  Oregon State is going to continue their bowl game streak this year and with wins at Arizona and at home against Oregon will be going to a BCS Bowl game (most likely the Rose Bowl), while Ole Miss will probably play in some lame bowl game for the first time in a few years.  The perception is that Florida lost to a better team under better circumstances than USC; the reallity is that Florida lost at home to a terrible team that will play in the "Cooper Tires Bowl" or some stupid game like that while USC lost on the road to a team that controls their own destiny as far as the BCS is concerned.  Advantage Trojans.

I agree with you to an extent.  Taking out the other bowl games I don't agree with as that is a huge economic issue in college football.  I do agree that Florida lost to a worse team than USC lost to.  But at the end of the day, both teams have a loss on the schedule and Florida lost by less than USC did.  On top of that every single one of Florida's games have been complete blowouts while USC has had a few close calls.  I'm pretty sure that that East coast bias stems from the fact that if you look at the Pac 10 there really isn't anyone except USC this year.  The second best team in the conference has losses to Utah and Stanford.  The third place team in the conference has losses to Boise State and Cal.  Those are the two best teams that USC plays (in conference, I know they play OSU as well).  Georgia has losses only to Florida and Alabama.  LSU has losses to Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.  Those are the two best teams in the SEC that Florida plays.  Both teams also lost in the same weekend and Florida lost by one point while USC lost by six, both teams were 2 loss teams at the time.  It makes sense.  Yes there is a bias, but it's not wrongfully based by any means.  Florida quite blatantly plays the tougher schedule and also has more dominant victories.

Ever notice we always want what we can't have? I have always wanted a play off but what would that do to college football. If that happen you won't have that team everybody talks about years later that should have, could have but didn't make it. You wouldn't have the media love given to Florida over Alabama in the SEC. With all it's faults the BCS brings about passion for the game.

Did you actually read what I wrote? I have always wanted a play off. However what we want does not always translate into what alot of fans like. Hence the post and conversations we are having. However Obama as president should let the demand of the fans and the game dictate the change. This is one of those things we all gripe about but until all fans start banning the bowls costing them money it isn't going to change.
