According to reports emerging from England, Manchester United wants to re-sign Gerard Pique. The Spanish international left Old Trafford for Nou Camp after earning a call up from the club he grew up in, Barcelona.

Sources within the club have informed that Manchester United want to strengthen their defense in the summers, therefore they would love acquire the services of the 25-year-old once again.

Pique spent four seasons with Manchester United before the youngster returned to his home town club Barcelona in 2008. His return to Catalonia has seen Pique become a regular in Barcelona and Spain’s first team.

Presently, Pique has become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s defense. His outstanding form has helped Barcelona win three successive La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

At Old Trafford, Nemanja Vidic is seeing the end of his playing days. So is Rio Ferdinand. Manchester United’s new crop of defensive players includes Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Rafael and Fabio. None of these youngsters have yet shown the capability to star in the first team.

Moreover, United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on bringing an experienced player to the field. This can only happen by signing a top notch defender. Although Pique is still young, the Spaniard has tons of experience to lead the team.

Pique did experience a dip in form this summer and because of that reason his price would have most definitely gone down. It would be impossible for Ferguson to pry Pique from Guardiola’s grasp but as Guardiola is expected to leave Barcelona this summer, signing Pique can turn into a possibility.

Reports flying in from London show that Chelsea have stepped up as competitors to United in the race to sign Pique. Chelsea manager Andres Villas-Boas is looking to revamp the aging squad. Villas-Boas is expected to re-build Chelsea this summer but that i.e. if his managerial term.
