Barcelona man Pep Guardiola coy over handling Chelsea
Pep Guardiola laughed off speculation about him joining Chelsea in the summers during a recent interview. Reporters tried in vain to pry out information from Guardiola, but the Spaniard remained coy over the prospect of him joining hands with Blues owner Roman Abramovich.
However, Guardiola admitted that there certainly was a chance of him acquiring the vacancy left by the sacked Andres Villas-Boas. Nonetheless, the former Barcelona midfielder refrained from creating any rumors that might suggest his preference for Chelsea.
When a reporter questioned Guardiola over the chances of him moving to England, the Spaniard laughed it off and instead questioned the speculation and rumors surrounding this saga.
Guardiola is one of the hot favorites to succeed Villas-Boas at the west London outfit. Other managers that might be up for the job are the Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and the former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.
The 41-year-old, Guardiola has recorded exceptional success with his time at Camp Nou. Guardiola won all kinds of trophies in a season, where the total number of the silverware he acquired reached six.
Guardiola signs a one-year contract extension with Barcelona each season but this time he refused to extend his stay with the Catalans. Guardiola later explained that his desire to coach in the English Premier League is the only reason he wants to move away from his beloved club.
Presently, Chelsea is being managed by an interim replacement, Roberto di Matteo. Abramovich wouldn’t lose the opportunity to sign in Guardiola and Guardiola won’t risk losing a chance to manage at Chelsea.
In spite of that, Guardiola was sarcastic when he was inquired about approach from Chelsea.
“I speak every day with Chelsea,” Guardiola said.
“Villas-Boas seems like a great coach. The time (managers get) depends on the results, not on our abilities. I'm not capable of judging the reasons for his dismissal.”
Chelsea won their FA Cup tie against Birmingham City by 2-0, giving a successful debut to Di Matteo. The former Chelsea midfielder has been given just once task this season, and that is to finish fourth in the English Premier League to confirm Champions League action for next year.
