Gerard Pique has confirmed Barcelona are in search for a new defender. It appears as if the Catalan club is finally fed up of its makeshift defense. Barcelona have using Eric Abidal, Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano, Adriano and Alex Song as center-backs for the last two seasons.

The defensive crisis at Barcelona is so severe that Gerard Pique is the only stable and qualified center-back the club possesses. Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has finally decided to bolster his defense with a couple of new faces.

With long-time serving center-back Carles Puyol to undergo the knife for the third time in just over a year, Barcelona will be left with only one center-back at the start of the season. In the wake of this dilemma, Gerard Pique has confirmed the La Liga champions have already marked a couple of potential transfers.

“I understand why Barcelona want to strengthen in the center-back position because last season we suffered a lot from injuries,” Gerard Pique added.

“All the names that have been linked with the club are very good players and we will welcome any new arrival. But I think we should remember we still have Puyol and if he starts to get fit again he will still be among the top five center-backs in the world.”

The former AC Milan defender Thiago Silva has been long sought by Barcelona, but with no luck. The talented defender has attracted interest from Barcelona once again, although Paris Saint-Germain are quite reluctant to sell him off. Moreover, Thiago Silva seems quite content with continuing his career with the Ligue 1 champions.

The versatile French defender Jeremy Mathieu has also appeared on Barcelona’s radar.  The 29-year-old Valencia player is reported to be interested in moving away. Moreover, Barcelona could acquire him for a cut-price since it is believed his contract is set to expire soon.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is hot-favorite for a move to Barcelona. The 28-year-old Denmark international has been linked with a move to the Catalan giants for the past couple of years. Reports suggest Liverpool are finally interested in hearing a bid for their coveted center-back. Barcelona could be willing to dig deep into their pockets to finally acquire his services.
