Barcelona set to beat Man Utd and Man City for Mats Hummels’ services
Barcelona are slowly making progress on signing in the Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels. The in-form defender has been one of the hottest transfer prospects in the football market over the past one year.
Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United have been constant contact with Borussia Dortmund over Mats Hummels’ transfer, but none of the English clubs have so far made any progress.
Mats Hummels has emerged as one of the finest defenders in Europe following superb performances for Germany and Borussia Dortmund. The 24-year-old center back played a huge role in recording success for club and country last year.
The former Bayern Munich player helped Germany into the semifinals of Euro 2012. Mats Hummels also played a pivotal role in Borussia Dortmund’s journey to two successive Bundesliga title victories.
Manchester United and Barcelona were set for a transfer battle over Mats Hummels during the summer transfer window, but the young German defender decided to extend his stay in Bundesliga.
Now, reports from Spain suggest Barcelona are set to make a final move for Mats Hummels when the transfer window re-opens this year. Barcelona’s Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta has already identified Mats Hummels as transfer target, which means the Catalan giants are currently preparing a huge bid for him.
With injuries finally taking toll on Barcelona’s legendary center back Carles Puyol, the La Liga leaders are in desperate need of a new defender. Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova have been using Javier Mascherano, Alex Song and Sergio Busquets as make-shift defenders at the club for the past two years, the results of which have been far from impressive.
Insiders at Barcelona suggest the Spanish powerhouse is preparing a €30 million bid for Mats Hummels which will be called in as soon as the transfer window opens again this summer.
Manchester City and Manchester United are expected to fight for Mats Hummels’ services once again. The Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson needs to find replacements for his aging defending pair Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. On the other hand, Manchester City manager needs to provide Vincent Kompany with a talented partner.
Mats Hummels admits he could be moving into a new club in the upcoming days.
“One day I will say that I am keen on a transfer,” Mats Hummels told German newspaper Bild in a recent interview. “To play football in a new country would be flattering. I already had offers and one enquiry from these offers was really one of interest for me.”
“But I told myself that the time is not right for such a move. There was a reason behind my recent contract extension. When you are a Borussia Dortmund player then you do not move to all clubs.
“In the Bundesliga it would just be about Bayern Munich, but this club has no shortage in my position. In Europe there are just about four to five clubs that would really interest me.”
