Tito Vilanova introduced Gerard Pique, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets, David Villa and Cristian Tello in the starting lineup. In spite of their star struck lineup Barcelona started slowly, but once they Spanish football giants picked pace there was no stopping them.
Lionel Messi was a constant threat in front of the goal. The Argentina international also assisted in play-making. The forward combined beautifully with Xavi Hernandez in the midfield to provide early goal-scoring opportunities.
The 25-year-old forward is once again the hot-favorite to win the Ballon d’Or Award. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo will be Lionel Messi’s main competitor, however most analysts believe the Argentinean will edge out the former Manchester United striker.
Cristiano Ronaldo recorded exceptional form to help Real Madrid win the La Liga title last season. If Lionel Messi is able break Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year, the chances of him picking up the Ballon d’Or will increase tenfold.
