Baseball Recap #6-Tigers Do The Flip Flop
5/11/08

Just when you think life was better for the Detroit Tigers......they are now back into flop territory on the Weekly Recap. Technically, Kansas City is last in the AL Central my mere thousandths of percentage points, but there is something not right about this Tigers team. More on the Flops in a little bit.

Meteorlogically, May is a tricky month because of the battle between winter and summer. In my home state alone, there have been two instances of severe weather in the last two weeks. What does this mean for baseball? Just ask Richie "The Beat Gets Lonely" Sexton who completely went off on a pitcher in a basebrawl recently. We're still waiting for teams like the Yankees, Mets, Indians, Tigers, Mariners, Rockies and Padres to come out their cold spells and heat up the pennant races. I think the AL Central's mediocrity will allow to Tigers and Indians to ease out their slumps and not be out of that race. I think it's getting close to panic time already for the Rockies and the Padres who are, not only play horribly, but also trail Baseball's best team so far.

The Cubs might have shaken their first slump by impressively beating Arizona two times in a row. Sweeping the Diamondbacks may be a hard thing, with Carlos Zambrano pitching today, there is hope.

Congrats to Greg Maddux, finally getting to career win 350. I read somewhere recently that Maddux may have surpassed Roger Clemens in becoming this generation's best right handed pitcher. If Clemens' character had not been questioned, this would not even be a close debate. This is why the steroid era has ruined a lot of things for baseball for those good and clean. Just ask Ken Griffey...

Some anti-flops among the teams:
-Tampa Bay is still hanging tough with a 20-16. Amazingly, the still haven't been more than 5 games over .500 at any point in their devilish history.

-Atlanta may be closer to last in the standings, but playing well for a team not really expected to do much.

-Other surprises: Houston, Minnesota, Oakland and the first place Florida Marlins, who has baseball's best road record.

One other thing to mention: Cliff Lee is on fire! He's now 6-0, with an 0.81 ERA . Incredible!

Now to the weekly special-The Hunter Flops. As per usual, this is a list of players and teams who are flopping the season fantastic.

Teams:
-As mentioned before, Detroit. They are also suffering from the Jared Jinx. My World Series pick is tied for last. They still haven't played like the team most thought would do well.

-Seattle: Basebrawling against Texas still didn't wake this team up. The worst record in the AL for a team I and others thought would surprise this year. I guess surprise in terms that maybe deep down, we really thought they weren't going to be any good....

-Toronto: Someone pointed out to me last week that Toronto really wasn't expected to be that good. Well, they weren't expected to be in last place either.....

-San Diego and Colorado: Yuck. That's all I have to say.....

-Milwaukee: At 17-19, could this team have peaked last year when they were 24-10? Something's missing besides the beef in Prince Fielder's diet....

Players:

-Ryan Howard. Sure, he has 7 HR and 18 RBI, but hitting .169??? My professional opinion: Yuck.

-Andruw Jones. .170 BA, 1 HR, 4 RBI. Maybe the biggest free agency bust this decade.

-Jason Giambi. Has roughly the same power number numbers as Howard, but hitting .183. Could playing in the field be tiring out Giambi already??

-Nick Swisher. He's above the Mendoza Line at .208, but I'm sure the Chi Sox were expecting a lot more. Unless Moneyball knew something the Sox didn't.....

-Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson and Justin Verlander. Their ERA's range from 5.82 t0 6.64. They are a combined 5-13 (Rogers is 3-3). No wonder Detrot is THE team flop so far.

-Bronson Pinchot Arroyo. 1-4, with a 7.14 ERA.

-CC Sabathia. Still awful with a 2-5 record and 6.55 ERA

Parting shot: Is anyone sick of Ozzie Guillen's shtick??

Happy Mom's Day!
