Baseball Recap#18: Harvey's Wallbangers And The Travelling Manny's
8/3/08

Two of this week's big baseball stories were the big series in Milwaukee involving the Cubs and Brewers and the monster trade involving Manny Rameriez.

The picture for this week's recap will truly invoke memories of the 1982 Brewers who went to their one and only World Series. The Brewers teams in the late 1970's and early 1980's were truly a loveable team and I would actually comment more on how I liked that team except being a Cub fan exempts me from that. Especially after we smoked them this week!! I have commented before and I won't anymore in this recap. Now to the trades. We all know by now what happened; what next for the teams affected? What teams should have done more??

I'm not sure what the Yankees were thinking when they acquired Ivan Rodriguez from Detroit. Sure, short term, they needed a replacement for Jorge Posada. But to get another aging catcher? I think they would have done better to get pitching...

I think Boston will be better off without Manny. Jason Bay will prove to be as servicable and much quieter. SoCal Angels did great in acquiring Mark Teixeira, even as a short term rental. They are looking to win in October. I don't think the Dodgers did themselves a service in acquiring Manny, since they have a slew of other issues. I don't see them in the playoffs anyway. And the ChiSox acquiring Griffey?? I think they created problems there, especially where team chemistry is concerned. I think Griffey is a decent player; I just don't think he adds much in Chicago. Plus the Sox will not be getting very in the playoffs, if they get there.

Florida and Tampa Bay did not deal, but I think was wise not to. I honestly think they have a good plan in place, even if they don't win this year. Not worth sacrificing what could be many good years for both. I thought the Mets could have done more, but maybe they feel comfortable enough with what they have. Minnesota didn't do much either, but their big move was recall Francisco Liriano from the minors, so that could be key if he pitches well. I'm surprised St. Louis didn't do anything, considering their injury situation. Like the Twins, a key in Cris Carpenter coming back might be enough.

Surprises/non Surprises:

-At this point in the season, I am surprised that Tampa Bay still leads in the AL East. I still think they fade and the Red Sox and the Yankees take the playoff spots. Something tells me, however, that I think the Yankees win and Tampa gets the wildcard. It will be interesting.

-I am surprised Detroit still have not made their big move. They always seem on the cusp. I will not be surprised if the ChiSox fade out of this thing. Their hitting stinks.

-I am not surprised the SoCal Angels are in first place with the best record in baseball. I am surprised not only with how large their lead is, but with Oakland fading as fast as they did.

-I am surprised that Florida is still hanging in there in the NL East. I'm also surprised the Mets rose from the ashes and is now in contention. I'm not surprised the Phillies are in first (and should stay there)

-I'm surprised that, until very recently, Arizona was playing .500 ball. I'm also surprised the NL West is this pathetic. I'm not surprised Barry Bonds has been blacklisted....

Hunter Flops:

And to our weekly feature. As per usual, I will list the teams and players who still amazingly continue to flop

Teams:

Detroit Tigers: Are you in or out?  Trading Pudge Rodriguez was ineresting, but for Kyle Farnsworth?  I can't figure this team out...

Oakland A's:  Major fade going on here.  Granted they traded two key pitchers and have had injuries, but I expected more

Washington Nationals: Could be more pathetic than Seattle.   And that's saying a lot.

San Diego Padres:  I can't believe I picked them to get to the World Series.  They suck.

Players:

-Andruw Jones-  .161 BA. Playing time I'm sure will be reduced with Manny around.

-Khalil Greene- .213 BA. Out for the year after puching clubhouse wall.  The wall won.

-Paul Konerko- .215 BA forced the ChiSox to trade for Ken Griffey.

-Dishonorable Mention (hitters): Tony Pena Jr.: .150BA and Corey Patterson: .189 BA.

-Barry Zito. Up to 6-13, but ERA still high at 5.40

-Nate Robertson- 6.06 ERA.  No wonder Detroit is still struggling

Any guess as to when Kerry Wood returns with his "blister" issue??
