As you can see in the picture, Ryan Dempster is ready for a cookout today!
As per usual, the Cubs truly frustrate me. Back to back extra inning losses to the Pirates. Two very winnable games...blown by the bullpen in the ninth inning of each game. Granted Sunday's game was truly blown by the horrible Alfonso Soriano. True, he's starting to hit now, but his field is very atrocious. He cost the Cubs yesterday and its sometimes evident that he's still smarting from his recent calf injury. Please, SIT HIM DOWN until he gets to be 100%. He cost us twice yesterday! I'll take a tie for first place by mere percentage points any day, but I think there's some pieces still missing and I hope upper management will address these needs. Get a fourth and a fifth starting pitcher. I can sorta deal with Jason Marquis, but get someone solid in the fifth position. As much as I hate to say it, get some more bullpen help. The Cubs' bullpen already has been overworked and I hate to think will happen come August. Dump Jim Edmonds...what a waste of a roster spot! Outside of that, I can't complain ......much!
Mendoza Line All Star Team Update:
In the preseason, I put an "All Star" Team of players together who were candidates for the "Mendoza Line" (sub .200 hitters). The following is a list of should be on the team now:
Candidates for 2008 (100+ AB):
C: JR Towels, Houston (.150); Ramon Hernandez, Baltimore (.214)
1B: Richie Sexton, Seattle(.197; does have 9HR); Ryan Howard (.204, but 14 HR)
2B: Asdrubal Cabrera, Cleveland (.179 BA); Euquenio Valez, SF (.207 BA)
SS: Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado (.152 BA); Tony Pena, Jr., Kansas City (.165 BA; his dad won't be thrilled)
3B: Casey Blake, Cleveland (.214); Jose Bautista, Pittsburgh (.220)
OF: Andruw Jones, LAD (.165 and on the DL for sucking); Jim Edmonds, Chicago Cubs (.168);
Austin Kearns, Washington (.187)
Hunter Flops: Players and teams still performing under their "potential":
Teams:
Detroit- Ugh! Still in last place; how long until Jim Leyland is fired????
Seattle- Playing badly all year long; could their manager be the first to go??
NY Mets- All kinds of ugly here; is this really surprising??
San Diego/Colorado- One was this close to the playoffs; the other made the World Series last year. Both are the worst in the NL
Any coincidence my two World Series picks are on this list????
Players:
Andruw Jones: see the Mendoza Line; the biggest free agent flop
Ryan Howard: His .197 BA is a flop despite his 14 HR
Gary Sheffield: Flopping with the rest of Detroit (.216 and 3HR)
Travis Hafner: .217 and 4 HR
Kenny Rogers: 6.66 ERA; enough said
Bret Myers: 2-6; 5.79 ERA
Justin Verlander: 2-7; 5.16 ERA
Steve Traschel: 8.82 ERA
Jason Isringhausen: 1-5; 8.00 ERA
Happy BBQ!!!
