Battle of the College Football Experts Week 4

9/21/06 in NCAAF   |   CriticalFanatic   |   respect

We're conducting a science experiment to find the real sports experts. Every week we're entering the "expert" picks published on the major sites (ESPN Gameday picks are also included). We also let the average fan enter their predictions. FanIQ tracks the results and reveals the"real experts" on Mondays.

The FanIQ Consensus (136-22) continues to hold its own against the experts. The fans winning percentage, .860 remains ahead of the expert (.820) through 3 weeks of college football. CBS Sportsline topped the charts in Week 3 and has the top 2 experts thus far - Johnny Rosenstein and Dennis Dodd. See Complete Leaderboard

Notre Dame vs Michigan State
Expert Consensus: Notre Dame (62%)
Experts picking Michigan State - Dennis Dodd (57-6, CBS Sportsline), Harmon Forecast (130-25, CBS Sportsline), Jason Horowitz (35-5, CBS Sportsline), Tom Dienhart (16-12, Sporting News, pictured)
Fan Consensus: Notre Dame (73%)

With little fan fare anywhere else, this rivalry is one of the top story lines of the weekend and one of the most difficult games to predict. Has Notre Dame been exploited and actually just an average team? Is Michigan State capable of stopping Brady Quinn? Despite Michigan State winning 7 of the last 9 games in series the experts appear convinced the Irish will avenge the flag planting and leave East Lansing with a win. I feel good that CBS, the top experts thus far have picked the Spartans ... however the weekly dunce Tom Dienhart doesn't provide much. Drew Stanton > Brady Quinn. Charlie Weis > John L. Smith. I'll go with the guys that have the ball in their hands. My Pick: Michigan State (i know, shocking)

Alabama at Arkansas

Expert Consensus: Alabama (56%)
Experts picking Arkansas: Pete Fiutak (124-30, CFN), Tom Dienhart (16-12, Sporting News), Steve Greenberg (21-8, Sporting News), Matt Hayes (20-9, Sporting News)
Fan Consensus: Alabama (82%)

Two easy ways to decide who will win this game: 1) the Sporting News 'experts' picked Arkansas and 2) the fans overwhelmingly pick Alabama. Mitch Mustain will be an exceptional quarterback, but in his first game against an above average team Mustain will be officially welcomed to the SEC. I can't agree with SN. My Pick: Roll Tide

Penn State at Ohio State
Expert Consensus: Ohio State (100%)
Experts picking Penn State: none thus far
Fan Consensus: Ohio State (92%)

Clearly, this doesn't look like that close of a matchup. No experts will be picking the Nittany Lions clearly and you can't blame them after watching Penn State fold in South Bend. This game will be much closer than you expect. Joe Pa may struggle to get points, but I was so impressed with the defensive approach last year that I predict he'll hold the Buckeyes to very few points. Troy Smith's hold on the Heisman may take a dip, but fortunately for him, there won't be much focus on any of the other front runners. My Pick: Ohio State (close)

Other Big Game Expert Breakdowns:
Wisconsin at Michigan (Experts - Michigan 100% / Fans - Michigan 3%)
Arizona State at California (Experts - Cal 92% / Fans - Cal 74%
USC at Arizona
(Experts - USC 100% / Fans - USC 97%)
