Bayern Munich are set to upset Manchester United’s attempt to steal Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona. The new Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has confirmed he is interested in bringing the young Spanish midfielder under his wings this summer.
Thiago Alcantara wants to leave Barcelona after his contract was violated. The 22-year-old midfielder was promised a greater number of minutes on the field, but at the end of the season showed that he was short. Consequently, this scenario lowered down the release clause on Thiago Alcantara.
Manchester United have been the frontrunners for Thiago Alcantara for weeks now, but Bayern Munich’s sudden interest in the attacking midfielder has made the English football giants second to the treble-winning side.
Moreover, Pep Guardiola’s playing and managerial career at Barcelona will provide Bayern Munich with a huge edge over Manchester United. Therefore, Thiago Alcantara is tipped to join Bayern Munich, although the race between Manchester United and the German outfit is extremely close.
According to reports in England, Bayern Munich is extremely close to hi-jacking Manchester United’s transfer target. The Spain Under-21 star hasn’t labeled any side as his favorite, but he is expected to favor his former boss Pep Guardiola over the new Old Trafford boss David Moyes.
Manchester United can become the frontrunners by offering Thiago Alcantara a place in the first-team. Bayern Munich already have midfield experts such as Arjen Robeen, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery, Javi Martinez and Toni Kroos. Thiago Alcantara will definitely find it hard to feature in a team with such stars.
“I want Thiago Alcantara,” Pep Guardiola said in a press conference on Thursday. “I have told [chief executive] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and [sporting director] Matthias Sammer that I want that player. I don’t know what will happen next. We will have to wait and see.
“It is either Thiago or no-one. I know him very, very well. He is a super, super player. He can play three, four, five positions.”
The arrival of Neymar at Barcelona will further limit Thiago Alcantara’s chances of playing in the first-team, a place that has been dominated by Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas, Lionel Messi and Pedro.
“No player wants to leave Barcelona. That only happens when a player feels he will not play too much in the upcoming season,” Pep Guardiola added. “With Neymar, a big player has joined Barcelona. Thiago wants to play and at Barcelona his chances would be worse.”
