Bayern Munich midfielder Frank Ribery has made it to the three-man list for the Ballon d’Or award. The French attacking player claims he is delighted an honored to be listed along with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
Ribery helped Bayern Munich won a total of five trophies in 2013, which include the Bundesliga, DfB Pokal, UEFA Super Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup. For his superb performance the France international has been nominated for the most prestigious award a football player can hope for – the Ballon d’Or.
“Whether I win or not I will still be happy,” Ribery said in an interview at the Dubai Globe Soccer Conference. “For me it is a pleasure to be on the shortlist of candidates with Cristiano and Messi.
“This year I have won everything with Bayern and I think I made a big contribution. Let's see what happens on Jan. 13. The important thing is to carry on with this winning streak.”
Ribery believes Bayern Munich is one of the best teams in the world. The 30-year-old winger believes Bayern Munich are the “strongest club in the world” because it operates like “one big family”.
“The key thing is that we enjoy playing,” Ribery added. “We're like one big family. I think Bayern is the strongest club in the world right now.”
Barcelona’s midfield maestro Xavi Hernandez was present at the event as well. The Spain international backed his teammate Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d’Or award whilst insisting that he was still the best player in the world.
Messi’s performance has been overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliant year for club and country and Ribery’s pivotal role in helping Bayern Munich lift major trophies last season. Nonetheless, Messi is still seen by many as hot-favorite to win the title.
“Ribery and Ronaldo have done great things to win the Ballon d'Or, but for me the best player in the world, and in history, is [Lionel] Messi,” Xavi said. “I am quite sure of it, but don't have a vote.”
