Beanie Wells' Injury Might Be The Best Thing To Happen To The Ohio State Buckeyes
At Least Now When They Get Blown Out By USC, They'll Have An Excuse, And Maybe A Shot To Lose Another NC Game
Whether or not you believe Jim Tressel's injury report on Chris "Beanie" Wells, Buckeye fans everywhere are holding their breath leading up to Saturday's huge matchup with the USC Trojans. Wells' status could have a huge impact on this game, which will in turn have a huge impact on the BCS picture. The winner of this game will almost certainly occupy the #1 spot, and many feel that OSU's only chance is with Wells healthy.

But in the end, is Wells' injury a Buckeye blessing in disguise?

While anything less than a completely healthy Beanie Wells could result in a loss against the Trojans, it would also do one more thing: Provide them with an excuse for losing the only truly difficult game on their schedule, and give the voters a reason to let them slide into the National Championship once again, no matter what happens in the USC game.

Losers of the last two NC games, the Buckeyes know that to get another shot, they probably have to go undefeated, and remove all semblance of doubt that they actually belong. However, if Beanie doesn't play against USC and they lose, it could present an interesting situation.

It's only week 3, and it's still early enough that a team could recover from a loss and remain in the NC picture. And if they lose without their Heisman candidate RB, then they have a (somewhat) legitimate excuse for the loss. It was clear in last week's game against Ohio that the Buckeyes desperately need Wells for their offense to run smoothly. If they manage to win their remaining games, then an argument could be made at the end of the season that while OSU lost WITHOUT Beanie Wells, they are a National Championship caliber team when he's healthy.

That may or may not be true, but it will definitely leave an impression on voters, unless Wells shows that he is 100% healthy, and the Trojans still win. While many people believe that USC would win no matter how healthy Beanie Wells is, that won't matter if he's not healthy. If Ohio State wins out after a loss to the Trojans, the only thing that people will see in the end is that the Buckeyes are perfect when Beanie is healthy.

That just might be enough to earn them another spanking at the hands of the SEC.

"The only truly difficult game on their schedule."

By that, I assume you mean it's because they are that much better than good teams like Penn State, Wisconsin and we'll learn more about Illinois and Michigan State in coming weeks.

Ohio State is traveling across the country to play USC. Every other team in the top 10 would be expected to lose as well. But wait, when it's Ohio State it's because "they suck."

Buckeyes are looking for any excuses. Didn't give any when they lost the last two national championship games other than they didn't play well.

Absolutely, absolutely.
How, when and who determined that this is OSU's only difficult game of the season is what I would like to now. Last year the Big Ten was supposed to be extremely tough with Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin all returning many talented players. The fact that for the most part those teams didn't play up to expectations and that OSU won another Big 10 title meant that the Big 10 sucked...right? That's what I heard over and over.

This year the assumption is being made that the Big 10 sucks well if several of the teams continue to play the was they are then the Big 10 would be on it's way to a very strong season....will it still suck to these people no matter what? Sorta like the way the SEC is and has been the greatest conference forever. Even though it has only arguably been the best conference for a couple of years and losses to La. Monroe by supposed SEC powers get swept under the rug.

As for OSU's "easy" schedule after USC, Penn State has looked pretty good to me and doesn't a game at Madison let alone a night game automatically move that game to the ranks of difficult, not to even mention the fact that Wisconsin will probably be very good this year. Then there is Michigan State and Illinois both on the road who have the potential to be very good teams. So I agree with your point completely, if these games are all assumed to be easy then whoever is making that assumption is considering OSU an all-time great team.

Perhaps I should have said "the only game in which they won't be favored".

Either way, this is the game where, at the beginning of the season, everyone circled it on their schedule and assumed that if OSU could win this one, then they could go to the NC game again.

Eddie George was interviewed today on ESPN Radio. He said that the Buckeyes don't have any game breaking - game changing running backs. After Beanie Wells, the cupboard is bare.  He's not all that enthralled with the wide receivers, either. I, for one, am very impressed with Laurenitus (spelling?) My Nits have a shot this year, heaven forbid.

PSU has a real good shot. It will be between them and Wisconsin unless those teams turn out to only be average then OSU would enter the mix.
OSU's talent on defense is probably some of the best in the country; however the way they are coached and the scheme they run (mostly zone) it gives them very little opportunity to show their ability and they generally seem to lack fire and enthusiasm and at are pretty much average.
