The Chicago Bears have been all about increasing their assets this weekend. Chicago Bears general manager entered the 2013 NFL Draft on Thursday with just five picks, but he left with six selections after trading down to gain an extra pick and acquire an additional player in the process.
In the whirlwind conditions ensuing the NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears continued this trend of adding to their offseason roster, hoping to pick out the top players rookies still available after they went unselected in the draft. With the minicamp closing in on May 10, the Chicago Bears are in a rush to find some of undrafted projects that can be polished to serve some previously overlooked position on the roster or to simply add depth.
The Chicago Bears concluded the first part of such efforts on Sunday by releasing a list of 10 undrafted rookies they had signed to free agent contracts on Sunday. In recent year, the Chicago Bears have had all but modest success with their undrafted free agent signings. Chicago Bears offensive lineman James Brown, who was signed by the team as an undrafted free agent in 2012, started just the final three games of last season at one of the guard positions. Former wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher also had a brief bout of success, playing all 16 games with one start for the Chicago Bears, as an undrafted free agent rookie in 2011. Meanwhile, third-year safety Anthony Walters has been a regular contributor on the special teams and started the Chicago Bears’ season finale last season. Even last year’s undrafted free agent signing wide receiver Joe Anderson showed moments of sparks in his rookie season.
So, by no means should these rookies be merely considered camp fodder as there have been names like Rod Smith, Brian Waters, Arian Foster and Wayne Chrebet who’ve risen from similar standings. While these rookie undrafted free agents may face a tough time fighting for a spot on the final roster, it should be remembered that undrafted free agents do make a significant part of most NFL rosters.
The Following is the list of 10 undrafted free agents signed by the Chicago Bears over the weekend:
  1. DT Zach Minter, Montana State
  2. RB Michael Ford, LSU
  3. P Tress Way, Oklahoma
  4. WR Mark Harrison, Rutgers
  5. WR Marcus Rucker, Memphis
  6. WR Josh Lenz, Iowa State
  7. C P.J. Lonergan, LSU
  8. CB Curtis Wilson, N.C. State
  9. DT Brent Russell, Georgia Southern
  10. CB Demontre Hurst, Oklahoma
