Before The Dawn

3/18/14 in NBA   |   pigskinfan   |   41 respect

A foray into last night's "most desirable" games in The Association would have left me with a split, so better off to have left well enough alone.  Tonight, we get a brief inkling of The Madness.  You know I don't mind the "play-in" games as much as I mind what a couple of them determine.  These games should all be for a 16th seed in the tournament.  There shouldn't be an 11th and a 12th seed up for grabs.  If the teams playing for those positions are deemed to enough to deserve them with a win, then the other team should be a 12th or 13th seed and not have to play the game.  They have this new invention.  It's called a coin.  Flip it, and get on with your life.

I also told you yesterday that I wouldn't be submitting any of my brackets (Yes, I'll play more than one.) till tomorrow night.  The reason for this is that Iowa/Tennessee matchup for the right to earn the 11th seed In the Midwest Region.  The winner of that game will face UMass on Friday, and if it's Iowa, I'd take the Minutemen.  If Tennessee wins, I'd take the Vols to win that 1st round game.  A bit of OCD, you wonder?  Probably, but if I'm not trying to have a perfect bracket, what's the point in getting involved?

And with that, The Madness can now begin.

THE NBA  (2-5 ATS/4-3 SU/3-4 TOTALS last night and 6-10/9-7/6-10 so far for the week)

BUTTA  (no play last night and 0-1 so far for the week)
Wizards/KINGS (O201 1/2) - I don't necessarily like either side when it comes to picking a winner.  I feel like the Wiz may be the better team, but they're a long way from home, and the Kings can be a real handful in their gym.  I do think the TOTAL is vulnerable to the OVER though, but I'm still reserving the right to pull off this one till I know for sure that both Bradley Beal of the Wiz and DeMarcus Cousins of the Kings will be in their respective lineups.  Both players are crucial to their team's offensive output, and missing either would be a huge blow to my desire to jump.

ALL THE REST
Heat 101 Raptors 102
CAVS (+9 1/2, O196) 101 HAWKS (+3, O199) 103

Bucks   96 Wizards (-2, O201 1/2)       105
BLAZERS (-11 1/2, O207) 117 KINGS 100

Magic   96
WARRIORS (-12 1/2, O201 1/2) 112

NBA NOTES:
---The Cavs are in a bad spot right now.  They were trying to make a push for a playoff spot and had an honest shot of getting there.  Now, Kyrie Irving is sidelined for who knows how long.
---I don't want to appear as though I'm sticking up for them, but it might not be wise to dismiss the Hawks tonight.  Kyle Lowery has been suffering from an "illness", and he's the straw that stirs the Dinos drink.  Also, Atlanta is 4-2 SU so far this season in games in which they close a b2b in their home gym.

COLLEGE HOOPS  (1-0 ATS, SU and TOTALS last night & 2-3/3-2/2-3 so far for the week)
The Madness is not the only game in town tonight.  All 3 "lesser" tournaments (NIT, CBI & CIT) offer opportunities as well.

BUTTA  (no play last night and 0-1 so far for the week)
Valparaiso (-165) over Columbia - As I go over the full schedule of college games for tonight, I try to avoid, but I keep coming back to this one.  Valpo has the advantage of being at home, of course, but perhaps the biggest edge they have is that they toiled in a much tougher conference than Columbia.  The Horizon isn't chopped liver.  The Ivy League?  Sorry, Poindexter.  Not impressed.

COLLEGE NOTES:
---Georgia St. will be an interesting study tonight.  In my mind, they were one of the big snubs for The Madness.  They'll either circle the wagons or play "woe is me".
---Watch out for Missouri tonight.  One of their big scoring guards and a huge part of their offense was arrested for possession last night.
---E. Michigan actually looks like the most dominant play on the board to me for tonight, but I just don't want to lay that kind of wood.  And, no, that isn't a misprint for the Norfolk score.

There we have it, folks!  Have a great night.  I'll see you tomorrow.
