Beijing 2008 Olympic Games NBC Schedule Day 5 Live Thread
Olympic Live Thread Goodness: Phelps Goes For Two More This Evening

The Michael Phelps Tour of Gold continues tonight with Phelps swimming in the 200m fly and 4x200m free relay. If Phelps gets even one gold tonight, he'll become the single most decorated Olympian ever. And I fully expect him to get two golds.

In fact, I'll be honest here. The only way Phelps DOESN'T win 8 gold medals in these Olympics will be because of a relay team he's on. Phelps by himself won't lose to anyone. I'd bet my small, cramped shack on that.

As for what else is going on, we've got the women's 200m IM, in which Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin compete against a field that includes Australia’s Stephanie Rice and Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry.

There's also some beach volleyball and synchronized diving.

And last but not least, tonight is the women's team final in gymnastics. Doesn't look to good for the Americans as their team is decimated by injuries and they're facing off against a team of illegal Chinese gymnasts. But who knows, hopefully Team USA can come through like Jason Lezak.

Tonight's Primetime NBC Schedule

8pm to 9pm - Medal-contending beach-volleyball Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers play Mariano Joaquin Baracetti and Martin Alejo Conde of Argentina (LIVE ET/CT). Dalhausser and Rogers - who have split their first two matches of the Beijing Games against Latvian and Swiss pairs - finished first at the 2007 World Championships, defeating reigning Olympic gold medalists Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil en route to the title.

9pm to 10pm - The world's best female divers pursue medals in the 10m synchronized platform final. China has won this event each time it has been contested at the Olympics - and Wang Xin and Chen Ruolin are likely to continue that streak. Because of their series of 1-2 finishes at major international championships, Wang and Chen have been called China’s “Double Guarantee” when it comes to Olympic medal prospects in Beijing. The American entry is a pair of 15-year-olds: Haley Ishimatsu and Mary Beth Dunnichay. The Indianapolis-based duo finished fifth at 2007 World Championships.

10pm to 12am - More swimming from the "Water Cube" pool and 23-year-old Michael Phelps can become the greatest Olympic champion in history when he races for possibly his fourth and fifth gold medals of the Beijing Games (tenth and eleventh of his career) in the 200m fly and 4x200m free relay. The all-time record for career golds is nine, which is currently shared by five athletes including Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and now Phelps after winning swims in his first three events in China. Spitz with seven still holds the record for gold medals won in a single Olympics, though Phelps has a legitimate chance to surpass the 36-year-old mark. In the women's 200m IM, Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin of the U.S. compete against a field that includes Australia’s Stephanie Rice and Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry, both of whom recorded sub-Olympic record times in qualifying. The women's 200m free is also contested. Plus, in the marquee women's gymnastics team final, talented teenagers Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin lead the reigning world champion U.S. contingent against formidable China, among others. Dating back to 1948 in this event, American teams have earned five medals (one gold in 1996); China, meanwhile, won bronze in 1984 and 2000, but still seeks its first team gold.

---------------

And for those of you brave enough to stay up until the wee hours of the morning, here it is once again....

Tonight's Olympic Insomniac Schedule (bonus: US women's team table tennis action tonight!)

CNBC

12am to 5am - The U.S. women's softball team plays longtime rival Australia in a preliminary-round game (LIVE ET/CT). American teams have won the softball gold medal at all three Olympics in which the sport has been contested (1996, 2000 and 2004). During that same span, Australia has won a silver and two bronze medals. Also, boxing coverage of elimination bouts in the 48kg light flyweight and 91kg heavyweight classes (LIVE ET/CT).

USA

2am to 5am - Rowing semifinals (LIVE ET/CT), U.S. women's table tennis competes against Singapore in the team competition, and women's beach volleyball featuring tandems from Brazil and Australia.

MSNBC

5am to 8am - In cycling, the men's individual time trial is contested on the same circuit used during the Olympic road race, near the Badaling section of the Great Wall. Riders race the clock over 29.58 miles and he with the fastest time wins. Riders can’t draft one another and team strategy may not be implemented, thus athletes seek possible advantages from advanced equipment such as carbon fiber disc wheels, teardrop-shaped helmets, and one-piece skinsuits. Also, Switzerland's Roger Federer meets Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic in third-round men's tennis, and a women's beach volleyball match between teams from Russia and Georgia that carries with it unintentional political connotations.

4 races, 4 gold medals, 4 world records and Phelps seems upset he didnt do better in that event.  I like that in a competitor, especially one who hasnt lost in a particular event for the last 6 years.

I love how no one can understand what the hell Bela Karoli is saying yet Bob Costas is shaking his head in agreement.

OK.  Here's a question.  Why do the divers shower off if they're getting ready to jump right back in the pool?

maybe it is warm water to keep the muscles relaxed, or the smell of chlorine messes with their balance---who knows????

Alright, here's the answer:

Why do divers shower between dives?

By The Associated Press

Q: Why do Olympic divers shower after each dive? Aren't they about to jump back in the pool?

A: "It keeps their muscles warm," said Joe Chirico, the Amateur Athletic Union's national diving events coordinator. "The air is usually a bit colder for the swimmers than the spectators."

Divers generally shower or soak in a hot tub after - and sometimes before - a dive to keep their muscles loose, said Todd Sherritt, diving coach for University of South Carolina. He said it's extremely important, particularly in cold venues.

While some divers believe diving wet makes for a cleaner splash, most will dry off with a little towel before their next dive, said Sherritt. If they're dry, they can grip better in tucked and piked positions.

To make a long story short, half of the girls on the Chinese gymnastics team look like they're 12.

NOPE! I am still waiting for that to be shown. Maybe after EXTRA and the local news.

When you finally get to see them, half of the crap you'll see is fake.

But all of it is pretty impressive.

Poor Hoff.  She can't get it done.  I guess it makes Phelps' journey even more impressive.

It seems like he got lucky with the world record, and it felt closer than expected, but there #4. The one thing that concerns me is that the commentators are getting a little overconfident...

Meanwhile, poor Katie Hoff. She seems snakebitten, although it also seems to me that NBC neglected to mention that Hoff wasn't necessarily *the* best in the individual events she's in.

Phelps was disappointed that he didn't get the WR, but you just made olympic history buddy!  The hell with tying Spitz's number of individual world records, that's olympic gold #10, and that's something nobody has ever done!

Oh man, I thought that was about the funniest thing I've seen so far in the Olympics - 'Panda Porn' !      Hey, there may be a market for that, who knows ?!      I'll call it "Porn-Da", and the DVD will come (ahem) complete with a bamboo rod (ahem).

Why did NBC have to have Mary Carillo do that piece (ahem) though ??       Couldn't they borrow Erin Andrews for that ?     Bonnie Bernstein ?      I'm sure Lisa Durgan could've found the time, or Jillian Barbarie (now that she's lost all their weight on NutraSystem !).

Classic !
