The Michael Phelps Tour of Gold continues tonight with Phelps swimming in the 200m fly and 4x200m free relay. If Phelps gets even one gold tonight, he'll become the single most decorated Olympian ever. And I fully expect him to get two golds.
In fact, I'll be honest here. The only way Phelps DOESN'T win 8 gold medals in these Olympics will be because of a relay team he's on. Phelps by himself won't lose to anyone. I'd bet my small, cramped shack on that.
As for what else is going on, we've got the women's 200m IM, in which Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin compete against a field that includes Australia’s Stephanie Rice and Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry.
There's also some beach volleyball and synchronized diving.
And last but not least, tonight is the women's team final in gymnastics. Doesn't look to good for the Americans as their team is decimated by injuries and they're facing off against a team of illegal Chinese gymnasts. But who knows, hopefully Team USA can come through like Jason Lezak.
Tonight's Primetime NBC Schedule
8pm to 9pm - Medal-contending beach-volleyball Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers play Mariano Joaquin Baracetti and Martin Alejo Conde of Argentina (LIVE ET/CT). Dalhausser and Rogers - who have split their first two matches of the Beijing Games against Latvian and Swiss pairs - finished first at the 2007 World Championships, defeating reigning Olympic gold medalists Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil en route to the title.
9pm to 10pm - The world's best female divers pursue medals in the 10m synchronized platform final. China has won this event each time it has been contested at the Olympics - and Wang Xin and Chen Ruolin are likely to continue that streak. Because of their series of 1-2 finishes at major international championships, Wang and Chen have been called China’s “Double Guarantee” when it comes to Olympic medal prospects in Beijing. The American entry is a pair of 15-year-olds: Haley Ishimatsu and Mary Beth Dunnichay. The Indianapolis-based duo finished fifth at 2007 World Championships.
10pm to 12am - More swimming from the "Water Cube" pool and 23-year-old Michael Phelps can become the greatest Olympic champion in history when he races for possibly his fourth and fifth gold medals of the Beijing Games (tenth and eleventh of his career) in the 200m fly and 4x200m free relay. The all-time record for career golds is nine, which is currently shared by five athletes including Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and now Phelps after winning swims in his first three events in China. Spitz with seven still holds the record for gold medals won in a single Olympics, though Phelps has a legitimate chance to surpass the 36-year-old mark. In the women's 200m IM, Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin of the U.S. compete against a field that includes Australia’s Stephanie Rice and Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry, both of whom recorded sub-Olympic record times in qualifying. The women's 200m free is also contested. Plus, in the marquee women's gymnastics team final, talented teenagers Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin lead the reigning world champion U.S. contingent against formidable China, among others. Dating back to 1948 in this event, American teams have earned five medals (one gold in 1996); China, meanwhile, won bronze in 1984 and 2000, but still seeks its first team gold.
