Beijing 2008 Olympic Games NBC Schedule Live Thread Day 9
Coronation Night for Michael Phelps
Sorry this is so late. I'm under a tape delay as bad as NBC's. Obviously, tonight's big story is the end of Phelps' quest for eight. His final event is the medley relay, an event the US has never lost. The lineup for the US tonight:

Backstroke: Aaron Piersol
Breaststroke: Brendan Hansen
Butterfly: Michael Phelps
Freestyle: Jason Lezak

Yeah, good luck beating those guys. Also on tap is the 100 meter final, a result we've know about for almost ten hours. Q it all up here.

NBC's Primetime Olympic Schedule

7:30 pm to 10 pm - Deena Kastor won bronze in the 2004 women's Olympic marathon. Now she tries for a U.S. medal in Beijing (LIVE ET/CT). Also, the men's 100m final yields the "World's Fastest Man."

10:00 pm to 12 am - In the men's 4x100m medley relay Michael Phelps swims for his eighth and final Beijing gold medal. If victorious, he surpasses the single-Games record set by fellow American Mark Spitz in 1972. Also, the women's team medley, the grueling men's 1500m free, and 41-year-old Dara Torres tries for her 11th career medal, in the women's 50m free (LIVE ET/CT).

Insomniac Olympic Schedule

I am flummoxed as to why NBC chose to show the women's marathon in its entirety.  It's more exciting to watch bread burn in a toaster oven.

No disrespect to the athletes, whose endurances are superhuman.

Sad thing is, this will probably be the only track event that will be live on primetime.

Britta Steffen officially wins the Best Performance by An Athlete Ignored By NBC of these Games.

Even though she lost, it's hard to hate on Torres. 2nd at that age is still insane.

Wow.  Of course VISA had the Morgan Freeman-narrated tribute ready to go before the race even began.

And I see Morgan Freeman is psychic as they already had the commercial ready to go.

And Michael Phelps the inside story is now ready to be ordered.
Wow, this is worse than Brett Favre.
Just kidding, in a week or 2 Phelps will be out of the news. We've got another whole season of Favre in the news.

Was it just me or did it look like the Australian swimmer left early just before Phelps got in the water????

Nope, I noticed the same thing.  Apparently he timed his lunging motion perfectly.  I may just be imagining things, but I think I heard Rowdy Gaines mention something about this.  He sounded a little surprised that the Aussie guy would take such a chance.

After finally seeing the 100 meter dash, two thoughts:

1.) Obviously I have the benefit of hindsight, but Powell looked nervous before the race, while Bolt was of course very loose to the point of bravado.

2.) After seeing him run the 100, and knowing the 200 is supposed to be his best event, I wonder if Michael Johnson's world record is in jeopardy.
