For seemingly the first time since I can remember, Michael Phelps won't be in a medal race today. Instead, he'll simply glide his into the finals of the 200 IM. So what's there to watch if we have no Phelps? Plenty, my friend. In fact, tonight you'll get to see two individuals who are maybe even more dominant than Michael Phelps. Wha?!Yep, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, who have yet to ever lose a single match in Olympic competition (they won gold in Athens as well), will be on TV wrecking Norway. We'll also get the chance to see some of the US women's swim team race tonight.
And, if you're so inclined, there's some cycling, too. You can be assured that with this being the Olympics, combined with the fact that it's cycling, everyone is doping...twice as much as they normally would.
Here's the day's full NBC schedule.
10am to 11am - The U.S. women's beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh have received many of the headlines in Beijing. But countrywomen Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs also have played notably well, already securing a place in the round of 16 by beating Dutch and German teams. But before moving on - along with May-Treanor and Walsh - Branagh and Youngs play their final preliminary contest against Cuba's Imara Esteves and Milagros Crespo.
11am to 12pm - Coverage of swimming includes qualifying races in the men’s 100m free. As he was in Athens, Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband is again the defending Olympic champion. If he can advance, the 30-year-old has a chance to become the first swimmer to win the same individual event at three Olympics. Also, competitors move toward final swims in the men's 200m breast and women's 200m fly - the latter of which might be the most wide-open women's distance of the Games.
12pm to 1pm - USA vs. Italy in women's preliminary-round water polo action. The Americans, reigning world champions, defeated China, 12-11, in their Olympic opener while defending Olympic champion Italy began its tournament with a 9-8 victory over Russia. At the 2004 Athens Games, the Italians edged Team USA, 6-5, in the semifinals en route to the gold medal. The U.S. then earned bronze over Australia.
8pm to 10pm - Coverage of the women's road cycling individual time trial which is contested along a nearly 15-mile course near China's Great Wall. Often called the "Race of Truth" since riders race only the clock - the fastest time wins, no drafting or team strategies allowed. Also, the men's 3m synchronized springboard diving final.
10pm to 11pm - Already assured of a spot in the next round, Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh play their final preliminary women’s beach volleyball match against challengers from Norway. The U.S. pair has not dropped a single set in nine career Olympic appearances and has won its past 103 consecutive matches.
11pm to 12am - Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin lead the American women's 4x200m free relay team in a swim for gold (LIVE ET/CT). Plus, the women's 200m fly, men's 200m breast, men's 100m free, and Michael Phelps continues his historic quest: On this night, no finals, but he swims to advance out of the 200m IM semis.
