We're barely over a week into this 2007-08 college basketball season and the freshman class is already taking over. Nevermind the cupcake competition (if you can even call smaller schools that anymore), the talent displayed thus far has me believing this 2007 class exceeds that of last year and might be the best ever. Here's what we've witnessed so far from the elite:
Derrick Rose, Memphis: 21 points in his debut on a loaded Tigers team. Can jump out of the gym, excellent passer and as smart as I've seen any freshman.
Michael Beasley, Kansas St: 31.0 ppg, 19.0 rpg in first two games
Eric Gordon, Indiana: 33 points last night with terrific defense.
OJ Mayo, USC: 32 points in his debut, although it resulted in a losing effort.
Kevin Love, UCLA: 22 and 13 in his first game. Already displayed the post skills of an NBA star and can step out to hit the three. Scary.
Kyle Singler, Duke: 15 points, 8 rebounds in his debut last night. Well on his way to becoming the next great Dukie we all hate. Won't put up as impressive numbers as the rest due to role with the team but belongs in the same category.
Now are these 6 better than last year's top 6 (my take) -- Kevin Durant, Greg Oden, Brandan Wright, Chase Budinger, Thaddeus Young and Paul Harris? Clearly too early to tell, but for the sake of argument lets give the nod to '06.
Where this class might separate from last year's is a better second tier. Keep an eye on these guys over the next month and we'll evaluate mid December.
Nick Calathes, Florida: 21 points in debut
Anthony Randolph, LSU: 19 points, 13 rebounds, 6 blocks
Kosta Koufus, Ohio State: 18 points
James Harden, Arizona State: Next Monday
Patrick Patterson, Kentucky: 12 and 12 last game
Jonny Flynn, Syracuse: Orange record with 28 points in first game
Blake Griffin, Oklahoma: 18 and 13
Taylor King, Duke: good range, might not get the minutes to put up huge numbers
Kalin Lucas, Michigan State: will start before too long, first game tonight
Craig Bracken, Iowa State: big double-double already
Too many more to list but I think we're watching the deepest and most talented freshman class ever.
