Better to be lucky than good

(Editor's note: I'm still soaked ... and speechless. I'll attempt to compose some thoughts on yet another classic game in this rivalry. Problem is, it was yet another classic Spartan giveaway. Fortunately, as a Spartan fan you learn what backbone is at an early age. Congrats Irish Fans. The better coached team won.)

WOW! Since I was a little kid my Dad has always jokingly said it is better to be lucky than good. But it is a game like that that makes me believe that phrase is true. The Irish came out and looked absolutely pathetic but MSU just didnt want to win that game. The fact that Terrail Lambert, who was responsible for several scorch marks in the ND secondary after getting burned against Michigan, had 2 amazing (one incredibly lucky) interceptions is insane.

And I know I may be alone in thinking this, and I realize the final line was 319 yds and 5 TD's, but personally, I thought that Brady Quinn again had a terrible game. Jeff Samardzija had an amazing run on his last TD and i will give Brady credit for dropping one in for Rhema where Mcknight made an amazing catch. ND's Oline looked terrible, couldnt get the running game going, missed an extra point, and let the Spartans run all over them. While it only gives me fear for the rest of the season, I, and all other Irish fans, can sleep happily tonight because well, sometimes it really is better to be lucky than good.

Lol, our place kickers have not been a strength exactly. Over the last few years ND has been unable to find someone to kick the ball to the endzone. Not sure what Bobby did to endure their wrath as I dont recall the kickoffs being too bad, but it doesn't surprise me. Thanks for the well wishes, I wouldnt say the game helped too much, with the exception of the end it wasnt much fun to watch. Let's just say if you were to tell me that the fate of the game hinged on the play of Terrail Lambert, well, I probably would have picked MSU in the College Games pick em

I was supposed to go but woke up Saturday morning sick as a dog. Not to mention losing power from late in the 1st qtr to early in the 2nd qtr, arghhhh. Anyway, I think you made some very good points Jason. Brady never has been a very vocal leader, Rhema has always been one of the loudest and most charasmatic guys on the team. And that is surprising to hear from Bob Morton, I've met him, real nice guy...crazy to hear, there was a lot of trash talking going on and the fight, he was probably just jazzed up, hate to hear that tho. And on the last point...well...I've got no idea. Let's just say that during the game I sure wasn't looking forward to games like Air Force which no longer seem so winnable. My only hope is that after a win like that there will be a HUGE momentum boost, and that maybe Brady will learn to play a full game. Who knows, either way, a bizarre game for sure. Sorry the loss had to come like that

I was impressed with 76 all game. Don't think any less of him for being pumped up in the moment. I just happened to be the closest Spartan fan that was around they're same age. Hope you're feeling better, I'm sure that game helped.

Just remembered to mention this ... I've never seen so many opposing coaches in my years going to games just CHEW OUT a kickoff kicker as much as Charlie and the ST Coach did to #14. Just unbelievable. Looked like he was going to cry on multiple occasions.

Hey Eddie ... seeing as how you were able to formulate some thoughts on the game shortly after the finish, I take it you weren't present.  What a game huh?

Having watched every single game of this rivalry since I was 6 or 7, and several live and must admit very few events in this game surprised me. Michigan State was Michigan State. Notre Dame was Notre Dame.

Spartans
- Although Drew made three consecutive errors to give the Irish the game, I only blame 25% of the loss on his shoulders. Yet again, the coaching mentality of "afraid to lose" carried over the field. A team in the first half that could have ran 31 points up on anybody was rigid, lifeless and lost in the 4th Q. Coaching, Coaching, Coaching.
- Is Michigan State good? I'm not sure. They're talented and they've yet to lose a Big Ten game but in the JLS era they've still failed to learn how to finish off teams with a killer mentality. With all due respect the Spartans should have dropped 50+ on that defense.

Irish
- Outstanding leadership on the team to keep push and push and push. MSU provided all the opportunities ... and good teams capitalize on those. Let me know if you've ever noticed this ... but Brady Quinn is very quiet. He doesn't strike me as a great leader. Rhema McKnight was doing most of the talking and motivating as well as big #76 (who told me eloquently to get the *&%^ out after Stanton's final INT ... that was nice of him).
- So my main question remains, and please believe I'm attempting to take all bias out of the equation. How good is Notre Dame? Sure they'll win the rest of their games until USC. But I'm just not sure.

I think that's all for now ... ;)
