No one in the entire sports world thought the Atlanta Hawks would even reach a game five against the Boston Celtics. However, they pulled all the stops and fought for a game six, tonight in Atlanta. The Celtics have had trouble covering Joe Johnson all series but the Celtics are way too talented to let one player dominate them for a whole seven game set. Johnson will face numerous defensive schemes tonight, leaving someone else on the Hawks' roster to step up. That person needs to be Mike Bibby.
Mike Bibby was brought over to Atlanta at the trading deadline for Sheldon Williams and some draft picks. The Hawks haven't drastically improved with him at the point guard helm but come playoff time, he's your man. So far in this postseason, Bibby has averaged 10.6 points per game and a little under 3 assists per game. These are not staggering numbers and his playoff poise has not shown yet. He already made headlines before the series started about how he felt about the Celtics. This, in turn, led to an outpour of boos every time he touched the ball on the Boston home court.
Any avid basketball fan remembers Mike Bibby's classic playoff battles with the Los Angeles Lakers. At that time, the Lakers simply over matched the Sacramento Kings, but Bibby's play in those series made it interesting. This guy can obviously play ball at a high level in high pressure situations. Joe Johnson has carried the Hawks so far but it is now time for the experience player with all the tangibles to step up. No one is saying the Atlanta Hawks are going to win this series, but I am still waiting to be impressed by Mike Bibby's playoff heroics. He needs to revitalize his career, especially tonight. If he can outplay Rajon Rando and Sam Cassell and force a game seven tonight, then Mike Bibby has done his part for the entire Atlanta Hawks organization.
