It seemed appropriate that the Big 10 finished off its horrific 1-6 bowl season last night with a gut wrenching loss to Texas. It also seemed appropriate that Mr. Sweatervest himself, Jim Tressel, lost his third BCS game in a row, although thankfully it wasn't another championship. So what's the problem? Why does the Big 10 suck so bad? Well, we could go into a lot of details here, like the conference is too slow, their offenses aren't explosive, they aren't able to recruit the top talent, etc. But why not just get it straight from Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany, who had this to say about watching a bored USC team throttle Penn State:
"You look at it and ask: Did the players play hard, and were they prepared?" Delany asked. "Yes and yes. You know what? SC's a better football team. In all of the [bowl] games I've watched, I'm seeing us get beat by better teams. Then you say: Why is that? I don't have a great answer other than to say that these things tend to be cyclical."
He better hope it's cyclical. Ohio State didn't even deserve to be in a BCS game, and while they put up a good fight against Texas, they still lost. USC as stated beat Penn State easily. Georgia beat Michigan State. Kansas crushed Minnesota. Missouri beat Northwestern. Florida State killed Wisconsin. Only Iowa won a bowl game, beating South Carolina, a team that finished 4th in the SEC East behind Vanderbilt. Yikes.
So how will the Big 10 solve this problem? I honestly don't know. I'd say start going to the spread offense, but then, that hasn't work so well at Michigan thus far. Perhaps moving the entire Big 10 to Florida would be a decent start.
