Big Ten Saturday Slate

What’s worth watching this weekend?  Here’s my preview for this weekend’s games along with the excitement I feel for each matchup based on alcoholic equivalency.

Double Kegger

Nebraska (4-2, 1-1) at Northwestern (6-1, 2-1) – 3:30 PM ET (ABC/ESPN2)
A huge matchup in the Legends division as the Huskers travel to Evanston.  After giving up 63 points to the Buckeyes, Nebraska may be in for another shootout.  Can QB Taylor Martinez limit his turnovers (notice the insinuation that he will turn the ball over)?  Will the Wildcats combination of Mr. Everything Kain Colter and RB Venric Mark dominate the Blackshirts?

Line: Nebraska -6.5
Seems high, I’d go with the home team to cover.

Michigan State (4-3, 1-2) at Michigan (4-2, 2-0) – 3:30 PM ET (BTN)
Rivalry game!  Campuses only an hour apart and teams moving in very different directions.  While much was expected of both coming into the season, Michigan State looks bad while their rival Wolverines appear to have turned the corner and have the Legends division in sight.  Will Michigan play with controlled intensity against their in-state counterparts?  Will Spartans RB Le’Veon Bell get rolling in Ann Arbor?

Line: Michigan -10
Michigan State plays inspired, loses by a TD or less.

Bottle of Jack

Penn State (4-2, 2-0) at Iowa (4-2, 2-0) – 8 PM ET (BTN)
From the matchup bag of “Who saw this one coming”, we have two surprises battling to remain undefeated in conference.  The Nittany Lions knocked off Northwestern two weeks ago and look to remain hot versus a Hawkeyes team that’s touting their RB Mark Weisman for Heisman.  Unfortunately, Weisman isn’t at full health so who will step up for Iowa?  Can Penn State QB Matt McGloin run his spread offense all over the improving Hawkeye D?

Line: Iowa -3
I’m feeling Bill O’Brien and Penn State, take the points.

Minnesota (4-2, 0-2) at Wisconsin (5-2, 2-1) – 12 PM ET (ESPNU)
Wisconsin has already won the Leaders division by default and now welcomes in the Gophers in their battle for the Paul Bunyan’s Axe.  The Badgers seem to have gotten out of their funk but will the ineptness of Minnesota drag them into a low-scoring slugfest in Madison?  Can the Gophers rally despite the myriad of injuries?

Line: Wisconsin -17
I’d stay away. Gun to my head, I’d take the home team.

Shot and a beer

Purdue (3-3, 0-2) at Ohio State (7-0, 3-0) – 12 PM ET (ABC/ESPN2)
This one has blowout written all over it.  Purdue pooped the bed in its biggest game of the year while Ohio State just wins.  Can Purdue play any worse?  Will Urban Meyer’s pep talk to the defense make a difference?  Maybe, but in this game it won’t matter.

Line: Ohio State -18.5
Scarlet and Gray, all day.

Indiana (2-4, 0-3) at Navy (3-3) – 3:30 PM ET (CBSS)
A stark contrast in styles here – Navy with their triple option and Indiana with their menacing spread attack.  Coach Kevin Wilson’s squad put up 49 points against Ohio State.  Read that again and let it sink in.  Will the Indiana run defense slow down an offense that surely can’t be mimicked in the weekly preparation? Can Navy prevent an Indiana offensive onslaught?

Line: Navy -3
Indiana, fun to watch but struggling to win. I’d take the Midshipmen and give the points.

Illinois - Bye
